Description

The Construction Lead is a highly skilled, hands-on construction professional responsible for completing the full scope of residential construction work on Habitat for Humanity homes and repair projects. This role requires a strong working knowledge of all phases of home construction and the ability to personally perform the majority of skilled trade work on site, from framing through finish. The Construction Lead serves as the technical lead in the field, ensuring homes are built safely, efficiently, and to Habitat standards while coordinating and guiding volunteers and subcontractors as needed. This position is not supervisory-only; it requires consistent physical participation in daily construction activities and the ability to lead by example on the job site. The ideal candidate is an experienced builder who takes pride in craftsmanship, problemsolving, and mentoring others while remaining directly responsible for hands-on construction progress and quality. Time Commitment: This is an exempt full-time position working 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00p.m. with Saturday hours (1-2 per month) and local travel required . Some flexibility in scheduling is allowable. Benefits: Include medical, paid time off, disability insurance, life insurance, and 401k plan. Salary Range: $68,000- $73,000 Qualifications: * Construction & Technical Expertise (Primary) * Minimum of 5 years (10 years preferred) of direct, on-site residential construction experience including plumbing, electrical, mechanical, carpentry, etc. * High school diploma required; a four-year degree from an accredited university with a concentration in construction, engineering, or business strongly preferred. * Strong working knowledge of residential construction techniques, scheduling, procurement, budgeting, warranty programs and continuous improvement. * Technical ability to read and interpret building plans, specifications, and land/infrastructure designs. * Functional knowledge of local building codes, permitting processes, and inspections. * Experience using construction machinery, equipment, and specialized tools. * Basic mathematical aptitude for calculating measurements, quantities, and materials. * Proven ability to maintain attention to detail and overall quality control. * Ability to solve problems creatively and efficiently to keep complex projects moving forward. * Experience with home rehabs/remodels and multi-family projects preferred. * Organized construction training or education to complement experience preferred. * Ability to adequately traverse a construction site, including lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing, and other physical activities required on-site. Must be willing to work on exterior projects in all four seasons barring any extreme weather events. * Safety and first-aid training for on-site emergencies. Teaching, Training & Volunteer Engagement * Demonstrated ability to serve as the lead on the job site, with responsibility for planning daily construction activities, sequencing tasks, and setting clear goals for each workday. * Proven capacity to ensure materials, tools, and equipment are prepared, available, and organized in advance to support efficient and productive work in the field. * Experience creating and assigning appropriate tasks for volunteers of varying skill levels, ensuring work is meaningful, safe, and aligned with project needs. * Leads toolbox talks and safety standdowns. * Strong leadership presence on site with responsibility for overseeing job site safety, modeling best practices, and ensuring compliance with Habitat safety standards at all times. * Ability to create a positive, welcoming, and educational experience for volunteers and donors that reflects Habitat for Humanity’s mission and values. * Teaching or training experience in any setting preferred, including mentoring volunteers, apprentices, or less experienced builders in a hands-on learning environment. * Ability to clearly and patiently explain construction concepts, tools, and techniques to individuals with limited or no construction experience. * Habitat for Humanity or similar mission-driven construction experience preferred butnot required. Teamwork & Project Coordination * Ability to work collaboratively as part of a three-person construction team alongside the Critical Home Repair Manager and the Vice President of Housing & Community Strategies to achieve the organization’s housing production and quality goals. * Demonstrated experience coordinating closely with project management leadership, recognizing that the Critical Home Repair Manager and Vice President of Housing & Community Strategies provide administrative, scheduling, budgeting, and compliance Construction Lead support to enable the Construction Lead to remain focused on day-to-day field operations and hands-on construction work. * Strong communication skills and willingness to participate in regular planning, problem-solving, and progress discussions to ensure alignment between field execution and overall project objectives. * Ability to accept direction, share field insights, and work within a team-based approach where responsibilities are clearly defined, and success is shared across roles. * Commitment to a collaborative work environment in which construction, project management, and organizational leadership function together to deliver safe, high-quality homes efficiently and in alignment with Habitat for Humanity’s mission. * Maintains healthy boundaries with team members, partners, and clients. Additional Requirements * Understanding and appreciation for the mission of Loudoun Habitat for Humanity. * Ability to travel locally as required; must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and required automobile insurance. * Background check and drug test required. * Is consistently punctual, demonstrating a high level of professionalism and reliability. * Consistently delivers quality work throughout the project and demonstrates a sense of urgency in completing tasks. * Respects others regardless of level and background and demonstrates humility in their words and actions. Job Responsibilities: * General Construction Activities * Collaborate with the Vice President of Housing & Community Strategies and the Critical Home Repair Manager to develop and maintain construction schedules that meet organizational and grant requirements, and provide daily updates on project status, materials, and expenditures. * Lead and supervise on-site construction activities, including volunteer crew leads, unskilled volunteers, and partner families, while fostering a positive, safe, and encouraging work environment. * Ensure all construction and repair work complies with applicable building codes, safety standards, and Habitat policies, including providing appropriate safety training and maintaining required Competent Person training. * Coordinate staffing, volunteer leadership, materials, tools, and equipment to support efficient job sites and high-quality volunteer and donor experiences. Construction Lead * Develops win-win relationships with subcontractors, municipal staff, and inspectors, including coordinating permits, inspections, and required approvals; leverages strong relationships to achieve schedule efficiencies. * Support sustainable building practices by monitoring site recycling, material reuse, storage, and coordinating gift-in-kind partnerships in collaboration with development staff. * Maintain inventory, organization, and coordination of tools and equipment across construction sites. * Assist with the recruitment, training, and support of construction Crew Leads. * Review, code, and approve construction-related invoices and expenses; document inkind donations; and ensure required subcontractor documentation (W-9s, licenses, and insurance) is on file prior to project start. Homeownership Program Activities * Overseeing and completing the hands-on work of the construction process on all LHFH new construction and home rehab properties. * Assist the Vice President, Housing & Community Strategies in the procurement of construction materials through competitive bid process and assisting in the development of donations of professional labor and in-kind materials. * Work with the Vice President, Housing & Community Strategies to identify suitable building lots and rehab homes. * Evaluate potential homes for feasibility of future projects. * Assist the Vice President, Housing & Community Strategies in creating schedules and budgets for the entire scope of LHFH projects. * Assist the Vice President, Housing & Community Strategies in developing plans and specifications including preparing materials list from plans and organizing timely ordering and delivery of materials and supplies. * Assist in permit drawings, applications, and inspections. Site supervision of all sub-contractors. * Oversee completion of “punch-list” items. * Conduct walk-through inspection with family upon completion of the home. * Work with the Vice President, Housing & Community Strategies in providing necessary warranty cards and manuals for the homeowner manual. * Work with partner families with callbacks, warranty issues, or maintenance advice. Home Repair Program Activities * Overseeing and completing the hands-on work of the construction process on all LHFH home repair projects (i.e. plumbing, carpentry, accessibility modifications, etc.). * Attend the home visit with the Critical Home Repair Manager and complete the whole home assessment as necessary. Construction Lead * Recommend the use of sub-contractors where appropriate and attend estimate appointments as necessary. * Site supervision of all sub-contractors as needed. * Assist the Critical Home Repair Manager in the creation of the scope of work following program guidelines as needed. * Assist in recommending the appropriate number of volunteer opportunities per project as needed. * Conduct walk-through inspection with family and Critical Home Repair Manager upon completion of the project as needed. * Assist in permit drawings, applications, and inspections. Community Strategies and the Critical Home Repair Manager to develop and maintain construction schedules that meet organizational and grant requirements, and provide daily updates on project status, materials, and expenditures.<br>* Lead and supervise on-site construction activities, including volunteer crew leads, unskilled volunteers, and partner families, while fostering a positive, safe, and encouraging work environment.<br>* Ensure all construction and repair work complies with applicable building codes, safety standards, and Habitat policies, including providing appropriate safety training and maintaining required Competent Person training.<br>* Coordinate staffing, volunteer leadership, materials, tools, and equipment to support efficient job sites and high-quality volunteer and donor experiences.<br><br><strong>Construction Lead</strong><br>* Develops win-win relationships with subcontractors, municipal staff, and inspectors, including coordinating permits, inspections, and required approvals; leverages strong relationships to achieve schedule efficiencies.<br>* Support sustainable building practices by monitoring site recycling, material reuse, storage, and coordinating gift-in-kind partnerships in collaboration with development staff.<br>* Maintain inventory, organization, and coordination of tools and equipment across construction sites.<br>* Assist with the recruitment, training, and support of construction Crew Leads.<br>* Review, code, and approve construction-related invoices and expenses; document inkind donations; and ensure required subcontractor documentation (W-9s, licenses, and insurance) is on file prior to project start.<br><br><strong>Homeownership Program Activities</strong><br>* Overseeing and completing the hands-on work of the construction process on all LHFH new construction and home rehab properties.<br>* Assist the Vice President, Housing &amp; Community Strategies in the procurement of construction materials through competitive bid process and assisting in the<br>development of donations of professional labor and in-kind materials.<br>* Work with the Vice President, Housing &amp; Community Strategies to identify suitable building lots and rehab homes. * Evaluate potential homes for feasibility of future projects.<br>* Assist the Vice President, Housing &amp; Community Strategies in creating schedules and budgets for the entire scope of LHFH projects.<br>* Assist the Vice President, Housing &amp; Community Strategies in developing plans and specifications including preparing materials list from plans and organizing timely ordering and delivery of materials and supplies.<br>* Assist in permit drawings, applications, and inspections.<br><br><strong>Site supervision of all sub-contractors.</strong><br>* Oversee completion of “punch-list” items.<br>* Conduct walk-through inspection with family upon completion of the home.<br>* Work with the Vice President, Housing &amp; Community Strategies in providing necessary warranty cards and manuals for the homeowner manual.<br>* Work with partner families with callbacks, warranty issues, or maintenance advice.<br><br><strong>Home Repair Program Activities</strong><br>* Overseeing and completing the hands-on work of the construction process on all LHFH home repair projects (i.e. plumbing, carpentry, accessibility modifications, etc.).<br>* Attend the home visit with the Critical Home Repair Manager and complete the whole home assessment as necessary.<br><br><strong>Construction Lead</strong><br>* Recommend the use of sub-contractors where appropriate and attend estimate appointments as necessary.<br>* Site supervision of all sub-contractors as needed.<br>* Assist the Critical Home Repair Manager in the creation of the scope of work following program guidelines as needed.<br>* Assist in recommending the appropriate number of volunteer opportunities per project as needed.<br>* Conduct walk-through inspection with family and Critical Home Repair Manager upon completion of the project as needed.<br>* Assist in permit drawings, applications, and inspections.<br><br><strong>Other Duties</strong><br>* Make informational presentations to schools, churches, business, civic organizations, and other volunteer groups as needed.<br>* Attend Home Dedications.<br>* Attend and assist with special events as needed.<br>* Assist with other aspects of LHFH mission as needed.<br><br>This is not a supervisory-only role.
