Description
Provides comprehensive services to students, staff and parents in areas of language, speech and communication development in order to empower students to reach their potential within the instructional program and to enable them to be communicatively competent adults.
Responsibilities
Screen, identify, assess, interpret and diagnose disorders, delays, and/or differences in speech (articulation, fluency, voice), oral pharyngeal function, language, and/or cognitive/communication.
Develop preventative and remedial verbal enrichment programs in areas of language, and/or cognitive/communication.
Provide habilitation, rehabilitation and remedial services to students with diagnosed disorders, delays and/or differences in speech (articulation, fluency, voice), oral pharyngeal function, language, and/or cognitive/communication.
Assess, select and/or develop augmentative and alternative communication systems and provides training in their use.
Provide aural rehabilitation to students with hearing impairments.
Enhance speech-language proficiency and communication effectiveness.
Screen hearing and other factors for the purpose of speech-language evaluation and/or the initial identification of individuals with other communication disorders.
Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary Pupil Personnel Services Team.
Organize the delivery of language, speech and hearing services to comply with local, state and federal service mandates and specific program designs within the building.
Confer with District personnel and parents regarding programs, classes, and individual needs of students.
Promote the development of communication skills in all students by acting as a resource person for District personnel.
Collaborate with teachers to integrate communication skills into the curricula.
Make appropriate referrals for communication, educational psychosocial, or medical management.
Maintain currency in the profession by participating in continuing education activities.
Construct professional reports to school personnel, parents, physicians, and others as required.
Compile data, statistical reports and other information on services provided for ongoing program evaluation and research on best practices.
Provide data and information regarding equipment, materials and supplies needed for screening, evaluation and habilitation services as required, for budget preparation and program management.
Attend departmental staff meetings, school faculty meetings and parent meetings.
Participate in projects and activities recommended by central management or schools.
Participate in departmental committees to promote best practice.
Attend Committee on Special Education Meetings.
Minimum Salary: $51,500 per year
Maximum Salary: $73,026 per year
Qualifications
Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
New York State Licensure in Speech-Language Pathology.
New York State Certification as Teacher of Speech and Hearing Handicapped.
Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association is preferred, but not required.
