Description JOB SUMMARY The Emergency Department Technician (EDT) assists with patient care under the direction of the RN, MD, PA or NP. All patient care team members act to meet patient needs and learn new skills to achieve quality patient care and excellent patient experience. Team members promote a cooperative working relationship with each other, other staff, and the public by facilitating and enhancing communication, displaying honesty and respect, displaying sensitivity to age specific needs and cultural differences, and expressing and accepting feedback in a professional manner. Responsibilities DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS % of time Essential Function (Yes/No ) Key Responsibilities (To be completed by Supervisor) 40 Yes Technical Duties: Accurately measures, records and reports vital signs with temperature, oxygen saturation and other data as assigned. Performs 12 and 15 lead EKGs including right-sided and posterior leads according to procedure. Sets up and initiates bedside and portable cardiac, respiratory, and oxygen saturation patient monitoring. Sets up and maintains 02 therapy equipment and ensures that oxygen tanks are full prior to patient transport. Performs routine wound care including setting up suture tray, wound irrigation and applying dressing(s) as directed. Assists in preparing equipment and supplies for procedures to be performed by clinicians. Applies and removes splints following instructions from MD, PA, or NP. Applies ice packs and orthopedic soft goods as directed. Assist patients with crutch teaching. Cleans equipment as needed. Tags malfunctioning equipment and takes it to the appropriate place for repair. Transports items to and from sterile processing department as needed. Operates unit equipment including fax machine, Nurse Call System and label printers as required. Accurately documents all interventions, vital signs and other measurements in the electronic medical record. 40 Yes General Patient Care Duties: Escorts patients from triage area to patient care rooms. Orients patient and family to care spaces. Prepares patients for examination, assisting as needed. Provides or assists patients with personal hygiene. Responds to patients’ call lights promptly. Assists patients with elimination - urinal, bedpan, or commode. If patient able, assist to the bathroom. Records output. Assists patients with nutrition such as setting up meal trays, cutting food and/or feeding. For admitted patients, completes Belongings inventory in the electronic medical record. Transports/transfers patients and equipment using principles of proper body mechanics. Completes unit maintenance activities including stocking and maintaining supply carts. Completes expiration checks as needed. Carries out duties of first responder in emergency situations. Provide 1:1 observation as patient safety attendant as needed. 20 Yes Other Duties and Responsibilities: Follows all unit, department, and Medical Center policies, procedures and work rules. Maintains confidentiality in matters related to patients and/or staff. Complies with HIPAA regulations. Follows Telephone Standards as established by Medical Center. Maintains knowledge of and adheres to all applicable Medical Center and unit specific infection control, health and safety policies and procedures. Completes all required training including annual safety and workplace violence prevention training. Supports the mission, philosophy and goals of the Medical Center. Supports the development of unit/team goals and actively participates in unit staff meetings, trainings, and educational programs as required. Contributes to and actively participates in the quality assurance and quality improvement process. Maintains a clean, safe and functional work environment. Starts work at scheduled time and completes work on time. Follows guidelines on use of sick leave and other paid time off. Complies with dress code, including photo identification. Provides unsolicited assistance to team members. Uses appropriate chain of command when applicable, e.g., problem solving, seeking information. Exhibits tact and professionalism in difficult situations according to PRIDE Values and Practices Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information. Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to safety and infection control policies and procedures. Assumes accountability for improving quality metrics associated with department/unit and meeting organizational/departmental targets. Work Environment Keeps working areas neat, orderly and clutter-free, including the hallways. Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong. Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture. Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout entire facility. Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows. Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments. Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft. Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: GED or HS graduate Current BLS certification Ability to work effectively within a team. Ability to satisfactorily perform job duties as defined in the job description. Willingness to be taught/learn new skills Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations (addition and subtraction). Ability to organize and effectively set priorities. Ability to carry out duties of first responder in emergency situations. Basic computer skills. This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: At least 1 year working as an ED Tech or EMT.
