The Aquatic Instructor is responsible for teaching Lifesaving Swim for Life lessons while providing a safe, enjoyable, supervised environment for pool patrons at the Jack Burger Sports Complex through the implementation of front-line aquatic programming in compliance with HIGH FIVE® standards, the Ontario Health Regulations, Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Standards; and ensures compliance with all regulations pertaining to swimming pool operations at the Jack Burger Sports Complex. Compensation $19.76 to $21.44 per hour Qualifications Some High school. Current certification in Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor. Standard First Aid, CPR “C” with AED. HIGH FIVE ®: Principles of Health Child Development. Lifesaving Instructor and National Lifeguard Service (NLS)qualifications preferred. Knowledge and understanding of how to operate safety equipment (e.g. AED, Spinal Board) preferred. Current working knowledge of Ontario Health Regulations related to pool operations as well as Ministry of Labour Standards preferred. Responsibilities Instruct aquatic lessons and programs, ensuring that all standards are being adhered to while providing a safe, enjoyable environment. Maintain accurate attendance records. Plan lessons in accordance with HIGH FIVE ® Principles of Healthy Child Development and Life Saving Society Swim Instructor standards. Use core plans to structure the course of lessons throughout a session. Prepare and follow lesson plans in advance of each class and as determined in Aquatic Manual Policies. Ensure that all Health Regulations are obeyed regarding pool tests, patron numbers, etc. Be knowledgeable about and follow the policies and procedures in the Aquatics Staff Manual. Be knowledgeable about the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture and respond in a positive manner to questions and inquiries from the public. Complete all required paperwork including, next level slips, final reports, class worksheets and tracking. Advise the On-Deck Supervisor or Supervisor, Aquatics of any problems related to equipment, pool maintenance, programs or public inquiries. Maintain Aquatic certifications as outlined below and participate in all scheduled staff training. Follow Aquatic Instructor procedures at all times while on duty and shall maintain attentiveness to participants. Provide safety supervision to all participants in and around pool desk, actively prevent water related incidents/injuries and respond to emergency situations as required and as trained. Adhere to high standards of ethical behaviour and demonstrate their understanding that their personal actions impact the public’s perception of the Municipality. Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Aquatics or designate. Skills and Abilities Verbal communication skills including courtesy and tact. Customer service orientation and interpersonal skills. Instruction, planning and implementation of program skills. Other Valid and satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check. Continuous standing and/or walking. Indoor pool environment; exposure to pool chemicals and warm temperatures. Occasional heavy lifting/dragging. In water demonstration of skill to participants.
