POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: FACILITIES & MAINTENANCE INTERN
Grand Canyon Conservancy (GCC) is the official nonprofit partner of Grand Canyon National Park. As the official philanthropic and collaborative partner of Grand Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon Conservancy’s mission is to inspire generations of park champions to cherish and support the natural and cultural wonder of the Grand Canyon. GCC raises private funds, operates retail shops within the park, and provides premier educational programs about the natural and cultural history of the region.
Ensuring the quality of buildings and grounds on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon where the GCC team fulfills its important work is the focus of the Facilities and Maintenance (F&M) team. Each year, key members of the F&M team include interns who receive an inside-view into the department’s operations while having the opportunity to learn new skills as they support a number of projects in a temporary, seasonal capacity. Successful F&M interns are those seeking to gain knowledge about how to maintain residential and commercial building systems via electrical, mechanical, heating, maintenance, and construction techniques and basic maintenance of fleet vehicles.
The application process is now open for the 2026 Summer F&M Internship opportunities, and all interested individuals over the age of 16 are encouraged to apply. Located at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, this internship is a non-exempt (hourly) position which pays $15.50/hour and reports to the F&M manager. Department operations are open seven days a week, including holidays, and work schedules can vary based on special events and after-hours work that may be building maintenance and/or weather-related. A typical schedule is Mon-Fri 7 am -3 pm, but details and final arrangements will be discussed in the interview process and confirmed at time of hire. Due to the short-term nature of this role, neither benefits nor housing are provided.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties vary with the workload and could include, but are not limited to, the tasks listed below.
• Assist with maintenance of buildings (including both historic and newer structures),housing units, GCC fleet vehicles
• Assist in maintaining exterior grounds within a limited perimeter of the buildings by trimming shrubbery, picking up litter, and sweeping pathways
• Assist with maintaining and repairing GCC housing units using skills within all basic trades, such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, patching walls, painting, etc.
• Assist with exhibit installation and take-down, including touch-ups and repairs to exhibit structures, gallery space, lighting, etc.
• May provide custodial tasks for stores and offices, such as basic cleaning, vacuuming, washing windows, polishing furnishings, maintaining hardwood, tile, and carpeted floors, emptying trash, etc
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Must be 16 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.
• Basic computer skills.
• Highly motivated and detail-oriented
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND CHARACTERISTICS
• Adept at working safely with a variety of tools and machinery
• Ability to take direction but also work independently once trained
• Have essential physical and mental capabilities in the following: Interpersonal skills, memory, attention to detail, time management, following directions, comprehension, calculating, reading
• Knowledge of maintaining, cleaning, and preserving a variety of surfaces
• Knowledge of proper use of a wide range of chemicals according to state and federal regulations
• Knowledge of handling and disposing of hazardous materials with care
• Ability to safely operate all vehicles and other job-related equipment
• Ability to use ladders and climb stairs repeatedly as required for work assignments
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position requires the incumbent to be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to:
• Lifting heavy items (up to 75 lbs. unassisted)
• Regular bending, standing, climbing, and walking
• Must be able to work safely in an environment containing caustic chemicals, cleaning materials, dust, and noise
• Routinely required to work under inclement weather conditions

Successful F&M interns are those seeking to gain knowledge about how to maintain residential and commercial building systems via electrical, mechanical, heating, maintenance, and construction techniques and basic maintenance of fleet vehicles. \\n\\nThe application process is now open for the 2026 Summer F&M Internship opportunities, and all interested individuals over the age of 16 are encouraged to apply. Located at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, this internship is a non-exempt (hourly) position which pays $15.50/hour and reports to the F&M manager. Department operations are open seven days a week, including holidays, and work schedules can vary based on special events and after-hours work that may be building maintenance and/or weather-related. A typical schedule is Mon-Fri 7 am -3 pm, but details and final arrangements will be discussed in the interview process and confirmed at time of hire.
