Department Overview
The Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) provides a multidisciplinary service for pediatric and young adult patients ages birth through 19 years, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Care in the Pediatric ED encompasses level 1 Trauma entries, acute care for medical and behavioral illness and injuries. In addition, the Pediatric ED provides Observation Care for patients requiring anticipated admissions Function/Duties of Position
Are you an experienced Pediatric Emergency Department RN who enjoys being involved in projects that make a difference for other nurses? Do you like to solve problems? The Emergency Department Assistant nurse manager is a frontline leader who engages with emergency department staff to improve the work environment. Assisted by a dynamic team of leaders who work well together, have great senses of humor and who truly care about the staff they work with, you will improve the care environment.
We work at a Magnet Designated Level One Trauma Center, Cardiac Center of Excellence and Comprehensive Stroke Center. We care for the sickest patients in the state and we do it well. The leadership goals of this department include a focus on staff safety and decreasing workplace violence, reducing capacity challenges, improving clinical outcomes and improving staff engagement including rewards and recognition.
1. Strategic & Unit Planning — Partners with the Nurse Manager to translate organizational and nursing priorities into unit plans; contributes to goal setting (short- and long-term), measurable targets, and implementation timelines; coordinates interventions, tracks progress using data, and communicates status to stakeholders; supports readiness for accreditation/regulatory changes.
2. Operational Leadership — Oversees day-to-day operations, including staffing, scheduling, assignments, patient flow, and escalation pathways to ensure safe, effective care; leads huddles and facilitates clear communication; may provide leadership coverage across all shifts (days/evenings/nights/weekends) as operationally needed.
3. Staff Supervision & Development — Provides coaching, mentoring, competency validation, and performance feedback; participates in orientation and evaluations; supports recruitment, retention, and succession planning; recognizes exemplary practice and addresses performance concerns.
4. Quality, Safety & Risk — Promotes adherence to professional standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements; uses data to monitor outcomes; leads/participates in performance improvement, event review, risk mitigation, and dissemination of best practices; supports standard work and error-reduction processes.
5. Human Resources & Employee Relations — Fosters engagement and a positive work environment; facilitates conflict resolution; supports attendance management and progressive performance management; ensures compliance with applicable labor/collective bargaining agreements and HR policies.
6. Resource & Financial Stewardship — Assists with productivity and resource monitoring; applies staffing tools and guidelines; monitors overtime/premium use and supply utilization; educates staff on financial implications of care decisions and supports cost-effective operations.
7. Professional Practice & Collaboration — Models ethical, professional nursing practice consistent with the ANA Code of Ethics and Nurse Practice Act; advocates for patients and families; collaborates with interprofessional teams and shared-governance structures; promotes a culture of safety, equity, and inclusion.
Required Qualifications
Education: • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
Experience: • Two (2) years of relevant clinical nursing experience in a related specialty, including demonstrated leadership responsibilities required. (e.g., charge nurse, preceptor, supervisor, or equivalent).
Licenses or Certifications: • Unencumbered Oregon Registered Nurse (RN) license (or ability to obtain prior to hire).• BLS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation.• Additional clinical certifications (e.g., ACLS, NRP) may be required by assignment.• Leadership/specialty certification (e.g., NE-BC, CNML, or clinical specialty) within two (2) years of hire
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in nursing or a related field
Previous management experience
Nurse executive certification
Proficient with word processing, computational spreadsheet (e.g., Excel), and presentation software
