Description ABOUT OUR DISTRICT The Syracuse City School District is On the Rise! We are undergoing a new phase of innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. For Syracuse, all means all. The School Board and Syracuse community have charged the Superintendent with improving student achievement, and she is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of educators to partner with her in moving the district toward its goals. The Syracuse City School District represents 35 schools and programs, including 6 high schools, 6 middle schools, 6 K-8 schools, 13 elementary schools, and 4 alternative education programs, serving approximately 19,000 students Pre-K–12. Of these students, 82.3% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 20.1% are served by the Office of Special Education, and 83% are students of color. Location: School Service Center DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS The work involves responsibility for performing a variety of semiskilled maintenance repair and related activities in one or a combination of crafts. The work approaches journey level in the trades but does not require the full degree of technical expertise and knowledge of the skilled trades person. Employees in this class perform rough maintenance and repair work covering several building and mechanical trade areas on a routine basis. Employees in this class may perform many of the manual tasks of the carpentry trade but generally are not required to plan and lay out structural construction or to do work involving the planning or design of furniture. The incumbent may perform the less complex tasks of the plumbing trade involving either replacement and repair or installation work with the layout provided by a skilled maintenance employee or a superior. The incumbent may be assigned to perform routine maintenance on heating and hot water equipment; may do a variety of welding work not requiring complex planning and layout or the use of special procedures; may perform the less complex and routine duties of the electrical, roofing, painting, masonry and locksmith trades; and may operate machine tools and perform less difficult machine operations not requiring difficult planning and layout. A Maintenance Worker 1 may, on occasion, determine the nature and extent of repair and may estimate the costs of replacement or repair, but only on routine or small projects which do not require involved estimates or specialized knowledge of quality, pricing, materials or equipment. Assignments may be received verbally or in writing and may be accompanied by sketches. The employee may devise his/her own methods for accomplishing assigned tasks. Supervision is not a typical function of this class. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES Repairs doors, window sash, storm windows, screens, window guards, locks and other door hardware, stairs, and railings; builds forms for concrete work; erects and moves partitions; assists in cutting, fitting, assembling and erecting wooden objects and structures; makes repairs to wood fixtures, ramps, ladders and frames. Repairs wood, plastic and metal furniture such as office chairs, wheel chairs desks, cabinets, bookcases and modifies furniture by adding bumpers, padding or special protective devices to meet special needs of user. Performs the less complex plumbing tasks involving either replacement and repair or installation work including such tasks as cutting, fitting and threading pipe; removing existing pipes and fixtures; repairing and adjusting water mixers, thermostats and other fixtures; locating and unplugging stoppages, repairing leaks in steam lines; and overhauling vacuum pumps. Operates and performs routine maintenance on heating and hot water equipment including the replacement of parts such as filters and pumps; periodically cleans equipment and firebox to insure efficient operation; replaces or adjusts such components as thermostats and points; and checks oil levels in storage tanks to insure adequate supplies. Points up brick and stone work; patches plaster walls, sets tile; lays brick or stone on a repair basis; replaces firebrick on a repair basis. Assists in repair and overhaul of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment utilizing methods of the electrical and plumbing trades. Overhauls locks and door checks; makes keys; installs locks and other door and window hardware; changes combinations on pin tumbler locks; and opens locks when keys are not available. Hand mixes plaster or cement and finishes concrete work or makes repairs by patching; may assist in the operation of a concrete mixer; may operate a concrete block machine. Does interior and exterior painting not requiring fine finish or decorative treatment, or assists a journey level employee in projects requiring high quality; applies primer and finishing coat using brush or spray gun; may paint vehicles and equipment; may do wall papering and spray painting. Performs the more routine repetitive tasks of the electrical trade including repairing electrical equipment such as vacuum cleaners, fans, electric ranges, overhead door motors or other equipment with small motors; replaces brushes on large electric motors; does general wiring; installs and maintains lighting fixtures; installs outlets and switches; adjusts points and contacts on electrical equipment. Repairs and rebuilds metal, slate, shingle and built-up roofs. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES Installs hinges, shelf brackets, sash chains, door handles and other hardware fixtures as needed; installs carpets, carpet tiles and drapes, drapery rods and fixtures; cuts carpet to install, repair or patch; repairs Formica, replaces ceiling tiles, floor tiles or vinyl flooring; applies or replaces grout. Cuts glass and replaces broken panes; and applies weatherization materials. Repairs broken appliances which do not require major overhaul. Loads and unloads materials as needed and cleans tools upon completion of projects. May operate shop machinery as needed to make such items as bookcases, tables, boxes, screens, doors and racks. May be required to maintain simple records which relate to maintenance or repair. May perform mechanical tasks such as making simple parts as needed by drilling, tapping, threading, cutting and grinding. May operate motor vehicles and power-driven equipment when required. May perform building cleaning and grounds keeping work such as snow removal, sanding, salting. May perform athletic field maintenance such as line striping and fence repair. When assigned to OCC, the incumbent may be assigned to perform routine preventive maintenance on heating, ventilating and hot water equipment. When assigned to OCC, operates and performs routine maintenance on heating, ventilating and hot water equipment including the replacement of parts such as belts, sheaves, grease fittings, filters & pumps. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILL, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Good knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods and practices of various trade and craft areas. Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work. Ability to interpret plans and specifications with instructions. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to interpret work from rough sketches. Ability to make rough estimates for time and material requirements. Ability to develop skill in the use and care of tools, materials and equipment of various trade and craft areas. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Three (3) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, assisting in the performance of semiskilled or skilled maintenance and repair tasks as helper to a journey level employee, as helper to a maintenance generalist, or as helper in at least one of the major trades. SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT When required to operate a motor vehicle, possession of a valid New York State Non-CDL or CDL, including any special endorsements, as required for the type of vehicle being operated. WORKING HOURS: This position will work 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. This position is full-time. This position is non-exempt. SALARY: The current starting salary for this position is $24.30 per hour, per the Unit 6 contract. QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered, all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the position as outlined on the Onondaga County Civil Service job specifications for this title. This position is full-time.
