Description

Job Summary The Receiving II role supports the Receiving Department by unloading plant material inventory from company transfer trucks and outside vendors. This position inspects incoming plant material, prepares it for stocking, and assists with placing inventory in the correct locations within the nursery. The role requires attention to detail, safe material handling practices, and coordination with inventory, purchasing, and yard teams to ensure accurate receiving and proper plant care. Employees in this role also support the development of Receiving I employees by demonstrating proper work techniques and helping guide daily tasks within the department. Essential Functions Offload plant material of various sizes at the receiving dock using team lift techniques to ensure safety and report equipment issues or supply shortages to the Receiving Supervisor. Verify plant material received against the purchase order and mark items not received on the bill of lading or within the RF-SMART handheld device. Cross-check and note discrepancies before posting received material in the system. Verify plant species, variety, and size to ensure the shipment matches what was ordered. Work with the Quality Control Lead to ensure plant health meets company standards and notify the purchasing team if poor quality material needs to be returned to the vendor. Assign color-coded cones to plant material that will be transferred to other nursery locations. Ensure plant material arriving from Southern California or Oregon is moved to the inspection area before stocking. Prepare plant material for stocking by watering, quarantining when required, or staging appropriately. Stock plant material in the correct locations within the nursery. Operate Kubota tractors to unload and stock larger plant material. Perform morning equipment inspections before use and report any issues to the Yard Manager immediately. Pick up empty pallets and racks throughout the yard at the end of the day. Support the training and development of Receiving I employees by demonstrating proper work techniques and assisting with task guidance as needed. Maintain nursery grounds by keeping work areas clean, organized, and safe for employees, customers, and vendors. Handle nursery stock carefully to ensure plants are watered, maintained, and placed in appropriate locations. Additional Responsibilities Maintain cleanliness and organization of the receiving area, including the loading dock and office areas. Assist other nursery departments as needed. Duties are subject to change at any time at management’s discretion. Experience and Other Requirements Required Minimum 2 years of experience working in a nursery, horticulture, or related agricultural environment. Ability to follow receiving procedures and maintain accurate inventory records. Ability to safely operate equipment such as tractors after proper training. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and other nursery staff. Preferred Experience working with RF-SMART handheld inventory systems or ERP software. Knowledge of plant identification and nursery stock handling practices. Work Environment & Physical Requirements This position is performed primarily outdoors in active nursery environments. Work conditions include varying weather conditions, uneven ground surfaces, and exposure to dust, plant material, moisture, and seasonal allergens. Physical requirements include: Remaining in a standing position 50–90% of the workday. Frequent bending, twisting, turning, and squatting while stocking plants. Ability to climb into vendor trucks when a loading dock is not available. Working on uneven surfaces including dirt, gravel, plant material, and irrigated areas. Use of hands and fingers for grasping and handling plant material. Lifting up to 50 lbs independently (approximately 75% of the time). Participating in team lifts of 100–225 lbs (approximately 25% of the time) with 2–4 people when required.
