Description
The Cytologist is responsible for preparing, screening, and evaluating non-gynecologic cytology specimens (e.g., body fluids, fine needle aspirations, and other non-cervical samples) to detect cellular abnormalities, infections, inflammatory processes, and malignancies. The cytologist works closely with pathologists to provide accurate and timely diagnostic information to guide patient care.
Responsibilities
Departmental Support:
Performs periodic quality assurance
Performs cytology related support functions such as accessioning and processing of specimens, staining and mounting of non-gynecological specimens.
Maintains the cytology slide file in accordance with slide retention procedures.
Technical Skills and Knowledge:
Screens and evaluates non-gynecological cytology specimens and assists with policy manual, statistical analyses, and quality program.
Performs non-gynecological cytology duties effectively to the operation of a lab.
Assists specimen collection procedures, such as fine needle aspiration (FNA), making cellular preparations during the procedure,
Performs rapid staining and evaluating the cellular preparation under the microscope for cellular adequacy. If rapid diagnosis is required contacts the pathologists when slides are ready for evaluation.
Performs Rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) with minimal pathologist guidance.
Professional Development:
Maintains currency in the field, including any required licenses or certifications by engaging in continued education, attending conferences, meetings, in-services, networking opportunities, literature reviews, or seminars.
Participates in all mandatory training sessions at The Christ Hospital. Utilizes the knowledge and skills acquired in work and department.
May also participate in internal or external professional committees, agencies, councils, and related activities.
Customer Service:
Cultivates and maintains positive working relationships with clients, colleagues, and other important stakeholders.
Responds to requests in a timely and effective manner.
Strives to identify, understand, and accommodate customer needs and expectations.
Shares relevant information with clients, colleagues, and key stakeholders to ensure clear communication and alignment.
Communicate significant findings and urgent results promptly to the pathologist or clinician.
Quality and Assurance:
Maintain high-quality slide preparation and screening standards.
Participate in proficiency testing, continuing education, and quality improvement programs.
Ensure compliance with CAP, CLIA, and institutional regulations.
Upholds the standards and code of ethics set forth by The Christ Hospital.
Maintains an organized work environment that promotes safety, accessibility, and efficiency for team members, patients, and families.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Required
Bachelor of Science Degree or equivalent; successful completion of CAHEA approved Cytology Training Program.
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
No experience required; 3 years of experience in non-gynecologic cytology preferred.
Experience with FNA procedures and molecular cytology techniques desirable.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
ASCP registered. Experience in quality control, cytology to histologic correlation and familiarity with CLIA 1988 regulations for cytology is preferred.
Strong knowledge of cellular morphology and diagnostic cytology.
Attention to detail and excellent visual discrimination skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Strong communication and documentation skills.
Familiarity with laboratory information systems and digital cytology imaging preferred.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent required.
