Description JOB SUMMARY The GI Endoscopy Technician II under the direction of the Patient Care Manager and GI Endoscopy Tech Supervisor, will participate as an integral member of the Endoscopy patient care team. The GI Endoscopy Tech II performs multiple support functions directed toward positive patient care outcomes and assists physicians with endoscopy procedures. All patient care team members are responsible for meeting patient needs, demonstrate willingness to learn new skills, and foster a harmonious work environment in which high quality patient care and customer service is constantly provided. Team members promote a cooperative working relationship with each other, physicians, other disciplines and the public by facilitating and enhancing communication, displaying honesty and respect, displaying sensitivity to cultural differences, and expressing and accepting feedback in a professional manner. This position will work at POPC and other UCSF endoscopy sites including San Francisco. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS N/A Responsibilities DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS % of time Essential Function (Yes/No ) Key Responsibilities (To be completed by Supervisor) 25% Yes Troubleshoot/correct technical problems with Endoscopy equipment. Send equipment and endoscopes for repair as required. Safely assists MD during endoscopic procedures Functions as part of procedural team to provide a safe patient experience Participates in Time Out as required Participates in double checking specimens to ensure correct patient label, location of biopsy or polyp, and lab slip. 15% Yes Performs processing and high-level disinfection of endoscopes and non-disposable equipment. Disinfect carts, countertops, gurneys and equipment after each use. Serves as a resource to other departments regarding the care and cleaning of endoscopes. 10% Yes Transport and assist with the set-up of equipment needed for cases, such as video systems, liver biopsies, ERCP's, etc. Maintain and assist with operation of endoscope towers and image systems to ensure proper documentation of procedures. 10% Yes Transport scopes to the Operating Room and assist other departments with scope turnover. 10% Yes Restock and maintain PAR level of supplies in Endoscopy rooms. Assists nurses or physicians by obtaining supplies during procedures. Oversee the ordering and restocking of medications for Endoscopy. Ensure supplies or medications are not expired. 10% Yes Assist with cleaning Endoscopy rooms between cases. 5% Yes Assist with lifting and positioning patients before and during procedures. Use principles of proper body mechanics and body alignment when moving equipment and/or patients. 5% Yes Transport specimens from Endoscopy to the appropriate laboratory. 3% Yes Maintain all infection control logs and other logs as received. 2.5% Yes Assists in the development and performance of departmental CQI projects and statistics. 2.5% Yes Maintains own clinical competencies. Attends mandatory training, conferences, workshops, or other programs to enhance knowledge and proficiency. 1% Yes Maintain order of equipment and gurneys in the hallways. Organization The Endoscopy Department provides comprehensive gastrointestinal care at Moffitt / Long (ML), Mount Zion (MZ) and Mission Bay (MB) locations. Patients are seen on an inpatient and outpatient basis and receive various procedures performed within the unit. The endoscopic procedures performed are some of the most sophisticated and advanced in the world. As a referral medical center, the Endoscopy unit engages in cutting-edge technologies with physicians who are recognized nationally and internationally. This unique and demanding work environment provides many opportunities for personal and career growth. Nurses and technicians have the opportunity to participate in unit-based quality councils, act as preceptors or serve on a multitude of task forces designed to identify and implement innovative improvements that lead to enhanced patient care delivery. A cohesive team of highly skilled nurses and GI techs work collaboratively with Attending Endoscopists and Fellows to provide excellent care during endoscopic procedures. Averaging 800 procedures a month, compassionate care is provided before, during, and after GI and Pulmonary procedures. Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) standards and guidelines are practiced and all career nursing staff are required to be certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
