About the Organization
More Than Words (MTW) is a nonprofit social enterprise that empowers youth who are in the foster care system, court involved, homeless, or out of school to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business. By working as a team to manage their own retail and online used book business and community space, youth develop the employment skills, leadership, and self-confidence they need to successfully transition to adulthood.

The Opportunity
The Volunteer Manager is an organized and enthusiastic alumn us of More Than Words who engages volunteers to support our mission in many ways. The Manager runs 2-3 group volunteer events weekly, interviews and onboards recurring individual volunteers, stays in regular communication with 30-40 individuals about their weekly schedule, and provides administrative support for the program including managing an active volunteer email inbox. The Manager reports to the Associate Director of Development, and also assists the department in routine and ad hoc administrative tasks, such as donation processing and event support.
Key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Group Volunteer Events ( 5 0%):
Maintains a detailed and accurate calendar of group volunteer events for all MTW locations, tracking open slots, dates on hold, and confirmed dates. Coordinates with staff at each location to confirm upcoming groups, plan tasks and logistics .
Personally runs all group volunteer events while engaging youth on the team , typically 2-3 groups weekly, arranging the schedule to allow the Manager to be at the correct location for that day. Works with youth to s et up the tasks, greet the volunteers, manage sign-in, give a tour, support the tasks, engage with volunteers, run check-out, make an ask for financial donations , and clean up the space.
Maintains volunteer email accounts at least once daily to provide quick and professional responses to all groups reaching out about volunteering. Responds to inquiries, offers dates, schedules events, sends reminders and information, and sends follow-up materials.
In collaboration with the Associate Director, supports fundraising goals for More Than Words by asking volunteer groups to contribute financially in conjunction with their event, as appropriate .
Maintains accurate records in the Salesforce database of all volunteer emails and activities.
Individual Volunteers ( 3 0%):
Manages schedules for 30-40 individual volunteers who come onsite weekly to support operations and youth development at More Than Words. Communicates with volunteers about closures/cancellations and with staff about volunteer vacations/absences .
Maintains volunteer email account at least once daily to provide quick and professional responses to all individuals reaching out about volunteering.
H osts ~quarterly overview sessions, manages an application process, schedules interviews, holds orientations as new volunteers are approved .
Coordinates with the Administration team to complete background checks and reference checks for all volunteers to be approved to work onsite.
Maintains accurate records in the Salesforce database of all volunteer s and their attendance, and accurate files on each volunteer s .
Collaborates with the Associate Director of Development and leadership at all MTW locations to ensure volunteer schedules and shifts align with business and site needs.
Develops and then implements improved systems for volunteer appreciation and engagement, potentially including social media profiles of volunteers, volunteer appreciation events, a volunteer newsletter, etc. , creating a regular cadence for appreciation.
Department Support ( 2 0%):
Supports Advancement Department with routine donation processing and donor recognition , entering donations into the Salesforce database, updating records, sending tax receipts, and writing personalized thank you cards.
Provides support for the marketing function by capturing photos and videos at various MTW locations as requested by the Director of Marketing.
Contributes to events and projects as they come up , including tasks like tracking RSVPs for events, helping with event preparation and set-up, etc.
Flexibly collaborates as part of the advancement team by participating in meetings , tours, and public-facing opportunities to support community engagement and fundraising goals.
Stays up to date and engaged with the organization to inform conversations with volunteers.
Key Qualifications:
An alumn i of the MTW program , who is no longer engaged in MTW case management
Strong communicator both verbally and written
Organized, with strong planning and follow through skills
Able to sit and focus on a computer for large portions of the day
Bring a growth attitude: excited for professional growth and developing skills around administrative systems, engaging writing, and public speaking
Responsible, flexible, hardworking, ethical, and committed to personal growth in racial equity
Ability to maintain firm professional boundaries as an adult staff from youth receiving services from MTW (readiness, core, career services, etc.)
A high school diploma
Ability to support evening and weekend work with advance planning (e.g., attending More Than Words events or volunteer fairs ) .
Ability to sit and type at a computer for long periods of time.
Ability to lift and move items weighting up to 25 lbs to set up for volunteer events .
Schedule: Typically Monday-Friday 9 AM - 5PM. Hiring manager would love the ability for candidate to work one weekend day if able . This role will work between our Boston and Waltham sites.
Compensation: $52,000 - $57,749; commensurate with skills and experience
