Description

Job Description: Wellness Manager Overview The Island School, a not-for-profit organization based in The Bahamas, was founded to create and support transformational educational experiences with the vision of leadership effecting change, on the island of Eleuthera. The diverse educational initiatives, including our High School Semester and Summer Term, Deep Creek Middle School, Elementary Learning Center, and our Community Engagement and Partnerships, deliver unique educational journeys in conjunction with the authentic and meaningful work our organization undertakes in research and sustainable development at the Cape Eleuthera Institute, our research, and innovation hub. We are reimagining what education is for, and redesigning how education is delivered. Job Summary As our organization enters into a chapter of new leadership, The Island School is seeking a proactive, innovative, and adaptable leader to oversee Wellness, medical services, and emergency response operations on our remote campus on the island of Eleuthera, The Bahamas. It is key that the candidate be a strong communicator and community builder with proven leadership experience and current certification as a Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician’s Assistant. This individual will lead a small team of medical professionals in working collaboratively with staff across the school to educate and support the dynamic needs of our students, staff, and island community. Additionally, our Wellness Manager must be comfortable participating in expeditionary learning and willing to obtain wilderness medicine training. The Island School and Cape Eleuthera Institute offer immersive, experiential education programs serving students and participants of all ages. Our programming runs year round and includes academic coursework, SCUBA diving, kayaking expeditions, rigorous physical activity, “down island” trips, and engagement in marine research involving corals, turtles, sharks, and more. We have learned that education and collaboration are crucial in reducing the most common health challenges our students face while attending our programs. The Wellness Team provides acute care, proactive health education, emergency response, and holistic wellness support with a primary focus on teens, extending into our community that includes newborns to elders. Eleuthera is a remote island with no hospital and limited medical resources; transportation to definitive care requires 5–7 hours minimum. This role requires comfort working in a challenging yet rewarding remote environment and a willingness to participate in wilderness- and water-based emergency medicine training. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Leadership & Team Management Serve as the primary face of Wellness across our campus and in collaboration with other department heads. Model professionalism, compassion, and collaborative problem-solving. Wellness Center Operations Maintain high standards of organization, cleanliness, and professional practice across the Wellness Center. Oversee day-to-day operations of the Wellness Center, including student and staff flow, scheduling, and follow-up care. Ensure timely and accurate incident reporting. Oversee maintenance of medical equipment, ambulance readiness, and facility upkeep. Coordinate communication and contracting with consulting physicians and medical directors. Lead the medical review process for incoming students. Collaborate with the Admissions Department to streamline interviews, record processing, and medical approval. Solicit regular feedback from a cross section of stakeholders in an effort to maintain continued quality, growth, and collaboration Cross-Department Collaboration & School Wellness Initiatives Work proactively & collaboratively with all departments to meet the diverse needs of the Island School community. Serve as a catalyst for innovation and community building within the Wellness program. Lead school-wide health and wellness initiatives, trainings, workshops, and response planning. Work continually to build strong relationships across departments and with the Leadership Team. Collaborate with other department heads on classes, workshops, and community learning. Engage in ongoing professional development aligned with school needs. Be an active participant in school-wide community building efforts Community Partnerships Maintain and expand partnerships with local practitioners, clinics, telemedicine providers, and regional organizations. Serve as an Island School liaison for the Cape Doctors program. Support medical outreach efforts that benefit South Eleuthera communities. Patient Care & Clinical Responsibilities Provide direct patient care, triage, OTC medication dispensing, and emergency response. Participate in an on-call rotation with Wellness Center staff. Coordinate local medical appointments and specialty referrals. Communicate with parents, faculty, and relevant stakeholders regarding medical care, follow-up, and restrictions. Lead health and wellness lessons for students. Maintain documentation, update external provider contacts quarterly, and oversee ambulance upkeep monthly. Emergency Response & Risk Management Identify emergency situations and lead medical response, evacuation coordination, and communication. Work with the Director of Risk Management to refine and implement health and safety protocols. Ensure emergency medical response resources and systems are functional and continually improved. Inventory, inspect, and order emergency supplies and maintain associated documentation. Facilitate First Aid/CPR training and emergency response scenarios for staff. This job description is not exhaustive. Duties may evolve at any time with or without notice. Skills & Qualifications Education / Licensing Candidates must be licensed in The Bahamas as a Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician’s Assistant. LPN, Paramedic, or EMT considered with strong leadership and managerial experience in a similar context. Experience Strongly preferred: experience in emergency medicine and in a school, clinic, camp, or outdoor program setting. Required: Comfort providing health and pastoral care to adolescents. Preferred: Experience with wilderness, adventure, or expedition-based education settings. Knowledge of dive medicine and sports medicine helpful, but not required. Leadership Demonstrated leadership experience with managing a team. Proactive, innovative, and confident in decision-making in dynamic remote settings. Communication Skills Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication. Ability to communicate clearly and promptly with parents (often overseas), faculty, and staff regarding health matters. Technical / Computer Skills Proficiency with Google Workspace and database management tools. Adaptability Willingness to live and thrive in a remote, tight-knit community. Comfortable participating in expeditionary learning and additional wilderness and aquatic emergency medicine training. Schedule The Island School operates year-round and working hours vary depending on Program needs. Evening and weekend work will be required. Special events will require periods of time outside of normal working hours when staff must be on-site for extended periods. Given the degree to which this position is a leadership role within the organization, the successful candidate should expect to work a variable and mission-driven schedule.
