Description

About St, John’s Founded in 1826 as a home for orphaned children, St. John’s has evolved into a nonprofit social services agency providing residential care to New York City youth involved in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. We offer holistic, trauma-informed support to young people up to age 21. Our main campus in Rockaway Park, Queens, houses a Residential Treatment Center, Close to Home Non-Secure Placement programs, administrative offices, clinical services, and an on-site NYC Department of Education school. We also operate a Non-Secure Detention residence in Richmond Hill and Limited Secure Placement programs in Brooklyn and Staten Island. St. John’s is dedicated to helping youth heal, grow, and build the skills they need to achieve their goals and return to family or a stable, supportive environment as engaged members of their communities. Summary Job Description: The Case Management Intern supports the Social Services Department as part of the multidisciplinary treatment team. Under supervision, the intern assists with permanency planning preparation, visitation coordination, documentation, and youth engagement activities aligned with the Missouri Model. This internship provides hands-on exposure to juvenile justice casework, treatment team collaboration, court processes, and safe release planning within a congregate care setting. Principal Responsibilities: Assist with scheduling and coordinating weekly parent/child visitation Support preparation for monthly treatment team conferences and release planning meetings Attend and observe treatment team meetings, school conferences, and IEP meetings Shadow staff at criminal court proceedings when permitted Enter case notes and relevant documentation into Connections under supervision Assist in gathering collateral information for case planning Support new intake documentation and transitional meeting preparation Observe youth progress during school or program visits and document observations Participate in supervision meetings to review case learning and professional development goals Attend agency and external trainings (ACS/OCFS) when available Learning Outcomes By the end of the internship, the Case Aide Intern will be able to: Explain the structure of New York City’s juvenile justice and Close to Home systems Describe the Missouri Model and its application within residential treatment Identify the components of a permanency and safe release plan Demonstrate professional documentation practices within Connections and related systems Observe and analyze youth-family dynamics during supervised visitation Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings and summarize case goals Recognize crisis intervention strategies used in residential settings Understand compliance expectations related to court proceedings, incident reporting, and OCFS regulations Minimum Requirements: Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or related field Strong organizational and communication skills Ability to maintain confidentiality Interest in working with justice-involved youth Ability to engage respectfully with adolescents with behavioral and trauma histories Travel Requirements: This position may require travel between 2 to 3 residential programs located in Queens, Staten Island, or Brooklyn. Travel to St. John’s administrative offices for meetings, trainings, etc. is also required.
