The Tla’amin Nation (TN) is a modern, forward thinking, self-governing nation located on the beautiful upper Sunshine Coast (qathet Region). Position Summary Job Type:                   Full-time, permanent Hours of Work:          May vary according to Supervisor directions, tasks and/or weather conditions Reporting to:              Director of Community Services Department:               Community Services Deadline:                    Open until filled As a member of the Public Safety team, the Enforcement Officer plays a key role in monitoring and protecting the lands, waters and well being of the Nation. This position is responsible for ensuring that that Tla’amin laws, regulations and policies related to public safety are followed. The Enforcement Officer works proactively and collaboratively with citizens and community members, staff, contractors and external agencies to promote compliance, respond to concerns to support a safe community as well as safe and respectful use of our lands. Key Responsibilities Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin policies, standards, practices and procedures as directed by the Director of Community Services. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to members, clients, employees and general matters of the Nation. Public Safety and Community Response Respond to community concerns, complaints and inquiries related to public safety, noise, animal control, land use and compliance. Promote public safety across Tla’amin lands and community areas through proactive regular patrols and presence. Promote public awareness of safety expectations, responsible animal ownership, wildlife safety, laws and respectful use of lands and waters, including through supporting education initiatives. Assist and coordinate with other enforcement agencies, emergency responders, and community partners as required, including Animal Control services. Conduct compliance monitoring and provide education and awareness where appropriate. Document and report incidents, observations, and enforcement actions accurately and in a timely manner. Lands, Oceans and Beaches Monitor Tla’amin Nation lands and natural habitats including creeks, clam beaches, oyster leases and waters to prevent poaching and illegal harvesting activities. Verify and validate harvesting cards, permits and authorizations. Patrol fishing and harvest areas to ensure compliance with catch limits and applicable regulations. Observe and document suspicious or non-compliant activity and take appropriate enforcement action. Inspects road issues such as potholes, drainage issues, dangerous corners etc. Assist in addressing leased land concerns, including hazardous assessment (e.g. danger trees) and enforcement of sub-division, development, and servicing laws. Forestry & Environment Inspect cut blocks, woodlots, and community forest areas to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and permits. Monitor and help prevent unauthorized harvesting or poaching of forest resources. Report violations and support enforcement actions related to forestry activities. Identify and report infrastructure concerns such as road damage, potholes, drainage issues and hazardous conditions. Monitor Tla’amin lands for illegal garbage dumping and environmental damage. Provide support in dealing with disasters, including oil spills, contamination sites and other hazards. Document environmental concerns and support follow-up actions or remediation efforts. Heritage and Cultural Monitoring Regular and joint patrols of sensitive heritage and cultural sites. Observe, document and report any unauthorized activities or potential risks to cultural sites. Other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Training, Education, Experience Post-secondary education in law enforcement, natural resource management, Indigenous governance, or a related field. 3–5 years of enforcement, compliance, or resource monitoring experience within Indigenous or community-based contexts. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Valid certification in First Aid/CPR. Valid Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) certification Valid Possession and Acquisition Licence for firearms, or willingness to obtain. Acceptable Police Information Check (including Vulnerable Sector Check) prior to employment. Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and acceptable Driving Record. Valid Class 1, 2, or 4 Driver’s License is an asset. Marine Radio Operator Certificate is an asset. Experience with domestic and/or wildlife animals is an asset. Use of Force training, Bylaw Enforcement training, and Emergency Response training are assets. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Ability to communicate calmly and professionally in conflict, confrontation, and high-pressure/emotionally charged situations. Physical capability to perform duties in varied environments (e.g., boat patrols, rough terrain, adverse weather) and walk/remain standing for long periods of time. Strong observation, documentation and report-writing skills. Skilled in using sound judgement and making decisions under pressure. Understanding of Tla’amin Nation’s new and existing laws and regulations, as well as applicable Canadian federal and provincial legislation relevant to enforcement activities. Proficient computer and technology skills. Working Conditions Work primarily takes place in the field patrolling Tla’amin Nation lands, including travel to remote and semi-remote locations, coastal and marine environments. The Enforcement Officer may be periodically exposed to unsafe or unpredictable situations in field and community settings. The position requires flexible scheduling, including early mornings, evenings, weekends and on-call response to community concerns or enforcement matters.
