Description
Summary: The Industrial Firefighter position requires skills and abilities in combating and extinguishing fires, performing rescues, providing emergency medical services (EMS) as assigned, conducting fire/safety inspections and education, apparatus driving and operational actions, participation in training programs as well as station, vehicle and equipment checks/maintenance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Fire
Responds to emergency and non-emergency service requests per Department policies/procedures. Requests include, but are not limited to, structural fires, vehicle accidents, hazardous materials, spills or releases, forcible entries, alarm investigations, rescue and salvage operations, extrication, confined space rescue, water rescue, and high-angle rope rescue.
Attends department training programs to include fire prevention, suppression, rescue, emergency management, EMS and other related skills or duties as directed by the Fire Chief.
Performs assigned shift activities to include equipment checks, apparatus checks and safety inspections. Identified problems are to be immediately reported.
Performs duties in a safe manner and reports any unsafe or unusual activity and conditions to supervisors.
Completes necessary reporting and duties prior to the end of assigned shift.
Completes project assignments and performs assigned areas of responsibility as directed and within a timely manner to meet or exceed deadlines.
Acquires and retains a thorough knowledge of the service area, interior and exterior, to include streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items.
Will be available for recall as determined by the Fire Chief.
Performs all related work as assigned.
Will respond to EMS medical calls as assigned.
May assist in the planning and evaluation of Department facilities, apparatus and equipment.
May be assigned duties to assist with public education, public relations and the promotion of a positive safety culture within the areas assigned.
Performs and/or assists in keeping work areas, equipment and apparatus in a clean and orderly condition.
Participates in emergency preparedness planning.
Provides recommendations and supporting documentation to the Fire Chief for department improvements.
Safely operate vehicles of NorthStar EMS in accordance with current motor code of the State of Alabama and pay due regard for the safety of the public.
Performs other related duties as directed by superiors.
EMS
Maintain personal knowledge and skills in order to deliver optimum patient care as an EMT role model for other emergency service personnel.
Conduct a careful and full examination of the patient for signs and symptoms of illness/injury and assist other medical personnel as necessary.
Provide prompt and efficient care of the patient and stabilization of condition prior to transport.
Provide careful handling of the patient in moving him/her to the ambulance.
Provide safe and efficient transport of the patient while constantly monitoring the patient and providing any continuing care within the limits of license and certification.
Provide orderly transfer of patient to destination.
When necessary, in the absence of other qualified rescuers and within limits of training, use procedures to gain access to and disentangle patients who require extrication.
Supervise the performance of assigned EMT trainees and other observers.
Safely operate vehicles of NorthStar EMS in accordance with current motor code of the State of Alabama and pay due regard for the safety of the public.
Stock and maintain EMS response vehicles and response kits in a state of readiness at all times. Maintain station and its contents.
Work in hazardous environments to insure safety and stabilization of the patient.
Work with local BLS, ALS, fire and law enforcement agencies as a team for a coordinated effort on the patient’s behalf.
Document all patient care, contact, assessments and all service reports in a timely fashion. Ensure that all billable items are charged for.
Participate actively in NEMS CQI program.
Maintain vehicles, radios, equipment, supplies and stations in a state readiness 24 hour a day, 7 days a week.
Makes daily checks of the vehicle equipment and systems and completes manifest and other reports/forms as required.
When approved and requested, participating in the training and evaluation of new employees and students.
Shall be punctual and ready for shift.
To act at all times in a professional manner and shall be able to handle conflict situations with good judgment.
Shall follow the NEMS chain of command.
Must be able to read and understand written instructions that are given by physicians, and that are placed on or with medications and equipment. These written instructions are written generally at the ninth-grade reading level but also use technical scientific and medical language.
Must be able to send and understand oral messages both in person and with the use of communications equipment such as radios and cellular phones.
Reports any vehicle malfunctions to the supervisor and maintenance shop. Documents the malfunction on the onboard maintenance sheet.
Ability to respect and hold in confidence all information of a confidential nature obtained in the course of professional work unless required by law to divulge such information.
Performs other duties as required by superiors.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
Must be at least 18 years of age or older
Current State of Alabama Paramedic/Credentialed/Interfacility (Transfer Drugs) license
Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with fellow employees, hospital staffs, fire departments, rescue squads, police departments, communications centers, management, volunteer fire departments and the general public.

OSHA 10 Certification is preferred. Will be required within 12 months of hire.
Pass a background check.
Successfully complete the departments physical agility requirements.
AO Pumper. Will be required within 12 months of hire.
Preference given to Firefighters who are an EMT Basic, Advanced or Paramedic.
Must be CPR certified.
(Optional) Driving Requirements:
Must be at least 21 years of age
Valid driver license
Current State of Alabama EMT-Paramedic, EMT-Advanced/Intermediate or EMT-Basic license.
Have current EVOC training certification.
Not convicted of DUI, possession of drugs/drug paraphernalia, suspended/revoked driver license or driving vehicle with suspended/revoked license in the past five years.
No more than two traffic tickets in the past three years.
No more than two motor vehicle accidents in the past three years.
No more than one traffic ticket and one motor vehicle accident in the past three years.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
Must have the physical agility to walk, climb, crawl, bend, push, pull, lift, and balance over less than ideal terrain.
Must have good physical stamina and endurance, measured by the ability to undertake, without adverse effects, lifting, carrying, and balancing loads in excess of 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance).
Must have the ability to see different color spectrums.
Eyesight must be correctable to 20/20 in at least one eye.
Must have good eye-hand coordination and sufficient manual dexterity to manipulate equipment, instrumentation and medications.
Must be able to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings in human physical conditions by using visual, auditory, olfactory and tactile observations.
Must be oriented to reality.
Specific tasks required will include:
Task 1 - Pass pre-hire physical
Must climb 5 flights of stairs, full PPE, with SCBA carrying hose pack (not on air)
Roll out 2 sections of 2 ½ inch hose
Drag “Rescue Dummy” the length of 50-foot hose.
Roll up hose
Task 2 - Spaghetti Drill with blacked out mask
Task 3 - Hoist 50-foot roll of 2 ½ or 3 inch hose, three (3) times, using hand-over-hand technique.
2-minute axe chop.
