Description
Indigenous Climate Action (ICA) is looking for someone with passion, who enjoys working on a team, setting precedents, and is committed to true Indigenous Climate Justice to serve as our International Climate Justice Lead . We are seeking someone with a keen interest and experience in international climate justice organizing to support our International Climate Justice Program.
This position requires a deep understanding of the intersectional approaches of climate justice and Indigenous rights and the important role Indigenous peoples play in this work.
This is a remote, work from home, online position with priority given to individuals who live in so-called Canada.

POSITION SUMMARY
ICA has grown tremendously over the last few years building new relationships and expanding our body of work. ICA is seeking a motivated and organized individual to take on the position as our
International Climate Justice Lead who will be responsible for leading ICA’s international climate justice strategy and delegation to attend the UNFCCC summits and allied events. This includes operationalizing ICA’s overall work within the International Climate Justice movement; networking with key leaders and community members in Indigenous-led climate justice initiatives; collaborating on educational materials and strategies for internal and external networks; facilitating training and preparation in collaboration with allied groups for attending UNFCCC summits, working with ICA to review existing international climate policies and materials, attend workshops and coalition meetings, support mapping out ICA's potential international climate justice strategies; providing written updates and other communication content for fundraising need.
The goal of this project is to support ICA’s international climate justice program and future goals and sustainability of this work, this includes creation of resources, contact lists, and training opportunities to support a broad based Indigenous engagement in international climate work.
The position requires demonstrated competency in the following areas:
verbal and written communications;
interpersonal relations;
strategic planning; must be able to resolve difficult problems, use analytical judgement, and be able to process a high volume of accurate, detailed, and quality work product.
organizational, analytical, and time management; must have the ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment regarding matters of significance
public speaking and facilitation expertise; must promote and foster communications with staff and external parties. Must have excellent listening skills.
Ability to travel extensively at times
working independently and remotely with little or no supervision; while being able to work democratically in environments such as the International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change (IIPFCC)
ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced work environment; flexibility and ability to manage competing demands; must be able to manage a myriad of on-going tasks in a fast-paced environment and adjust to changes.
maintains strong accountability practices; must maintain a strict code of ethics in working with highly confidential data.
Willingness to take ownership for wide-ranging responsibilities; demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; looks for ways to improve own work to ensure quality.
The International Climate Justice Lead duties are as follows:
Work in collaboration with the Manager of Education & Training and Campaigns Manager to support the overall work for ICA’s participation in ongoing UN fora related to climate change
Collaborate with Inform and Connect pod to promote, develop, and implement strategic partnerships through identifying and developing contact lists with Indigenous communities, nations, groups, organizations, and settler allies to support international climate justice programming (to be included in our CRM)
Look for opportunities with ICA partners, such as Woven to align key messaging on Indigenous Rights and Climate Justice campaigns and/or events.
Develop and nurture a list of strategic partners (organizational, groups and communities) for ICA to coordinate and work with in attending UN climate spaces.
Coordinate and host virtual and potentially in person round table discussions with Indigenous communities in so-called Canada to inform what education and training, research or key calls to action ICA will utilize in our participation in international climate spaces.
In collaboration with the Education & Training and Research and Policy teams coordinate the development of key resources and training opportunities to support ICA and community delegations to UN climate spaces.
In collaboration with the Campaigns Manager support the coordination of calls to action, campaigns and demands during international climate meetings and gatherings.
Collaborate with the Inform & Connect Pod (Communications, Campaigns, and Community Engagement) to represent ICA’s brand, communications and recruitment processes for attendance at UN meetings.
represent ICA at key events, and mobilizations;
Provide content for grant applications and reports regarding ICA’s strategy for ongoing participation in International Climate Justice
other assigned duties.
Qualifications
post secondary education, degree or diploma in environmental studies, Indigenous studies or other related fields an asset;
Experience working and attending International Climate Policy spaces
demonstrated commitment to Indigenous rights through campaigning, community engagement, and education through previous employment or volunteer experience;
demonstrated commitment to culture and/or language revitalization, including land-based cultural practices and ceremonies
strong project planning skills, with the ability to set goals and achieve results;
experience organizing meetings and/or events;
strong group and workshop facilitation skills;
strong communication skills, including ability to engage the public in conversations of Indigenous rights, climate change, equity, and social and climate justice;
familiarity or willingness to learn ICA’s office software and communication applications (e.g. e-calendars, Slack, Zoom, GSuite, and Asana);
must be legally entitled to work in Canada;
desire to work efficiently as a team player;
Experience and understanding of climate justice and Indigenous peoples rights, culture, and histories in so-called Canada
Experience and understanding of Environmental justice and practices of anti-oppression and decolonial pedagogies
Must have the ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment regarding matters of significance
The position is full time and entails a 35 hour work week, however we strive to work 30 hours per week most weeks as per ICA’s Four Day work week policy. However, some travel and evening/weekend hours may be required when it is safe to do so with consideration to COVID conditions. The successful candidate must be willing to be flexible and work hours required to meet ICA expectations. A Criminal Record check, including a Vulnerable Sector check, will be required for the successful candidate after the probationary period. ICA can assist with this process.
SALARY: $70,000-80,000 Prorated time off + MERCs + health benefits + proD + office subsidies
