Position: Per Diem- Youth Counselor - Bronx 24-hour Drop-in Center
Supervisor: Assistant Director of Runaway Homeless Youth Services
Overview: The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering a comprehensive range of integrated services within a single site for nearly eleven thousand New York City youth each year. Our mission is to empower young adults to reach their full potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation services, career development, housing supports, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals – all for free and under one roof. By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide any motivated young person with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to successfully transition into adulthood.
The Per Diem- Youth Counselor will support the Runaway and Homeless Youth program by providing guidance and provision to homeless and unstably housed youth in order ensure that the basic needs (food, clothing, resting, hygiene) of young people are met, while ensuring their safety during the overnight.
Responsibilities:
Monitor participant activities and provide crisis intervention as needed.
Ensure that Night Staff Policy and Procedures are followed.
Complete and submit Face Sheet for each participant as they enter for overnight services.
Complete intake paperwork with new participants
Submit an overnight census at the end of the shift.
Be flexible and/or available for holiday shift coverage when needed.
Implement positive youth development focused activities for participants as needed.
Assist participants in accessing basic needs: shower, laundry, resting space, food.
Ensure that participant items are properly and securely put away during the overnight to avoid theft and fire hazards.
Ensure the cleanliness of the shower/laundry areas after every use.
Wash/dry and properly store towels.
Restock hygiene products and crisis clothing as needed.
Document all incidents and interventions with participants and building security in shift report and via email.
Communicate appropriately with daytime staff and program management during and following crisis situations.
Attend all relevant meetings, trainings, workshops, and outside events.
Other responsibilities and functions as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications:
A minimum of a high school diploma or HSE; Bachelors preferred
Minimum of one to two years’ experience with adolescents utilizing positive youth development principles
Experience working with diverse at-risk populations such as LGBTQ+, homelessness, mental health, and substance use
Knowledge of social service systems and community resources as they relate to the youth/young adult population
Demonstrate an understanding of and practice the principles of positive youth/young adult development
Understanding of adolescent and young adult development, assessment, counseling and/or crisis management
Ability to engage people from strength based, trauma-informed person-centered philosophy
Ability to provide crisis intervention when necessary
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Hours: As needed weekly, including holidays
Rate: $21.00 Hourly
Hours: Saturday 11pm-7am Sunday 11pm to 7am Monday 11pm to 7am Tuesday 11pm to 7am

By providing participants with our suite of integrated services, we seek to provide any motivated young person with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to successfully transition into adulthood. \\r\\n\\r\\nThe Per Diem- Youth Counselor will support the Runaway and Homeless Youth program by providing guidance and provision to homeless and unstably housed youth in order ensure that the basic needs (food, clothing, resting, hygiene) of young people are met, while ensuring their safety during the overnight. \\r\\n\\r\\nResponsibilities: \\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tMonitor participant activities and provide crisis intervention as needed. \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tEnsure that Night Staff Policy and Procedures are followed. \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tComplete and submit Face Sheet for each participant as they enter for overnight services. \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tComplete intake paperwork with new participants \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tSubmit an overnight census at the end of the shift. \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tBe flexible and/or available for holiday shift coverage when needed. \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tImplement positive youth development focused activities for participants as needed. \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tAssist participants in accessing basic needs: shower, laundry, resting space, food. \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tEnsure that participant items are properly and securely put away during the overnight to avoid theft and fire hazards. \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tEnsure the cleanliness of the shower/laundry areas after every use. \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tWash/dry and properly store towels. \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tRestock hygiene products and crisis clothing as needed. \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tDocument all incidents and interventions with participants and building security in shift report and via email. \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tCommunicate appropriately with daytime staff and program management during and following crisis situations. \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tAttend all relevant meetings, trainings, workshops, and outside events. \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tOther responsibilities and functions as assigned by the supervisor. \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n \\r\\n\\r\\nQualifications: \\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tA minimum of a high school diploma or HSE; Bachelors preferred \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tMinimum of one to two years’ experience with adolescents utilizing positive youth development principles \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tExperience working with diverse at-risk populations such as LGBTQ+, homelessness, mental health, and substance use \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tKnowledge of social service systems and community resources as they relate to the youth/young adult population \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tDemonstrate an understanding of and practice the principles of positive youth/young adult development \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tUnderstanding of adolescent and young adult development, assessment, counseling and/or crisis management \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tAbility to engage people from strength based, trauma-informed person-centered philosophy \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tAbility to provide crisis intervention when necessary \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\tExcellent oral and written communication skills \\r\\n\\t\\r\\n\\r\\n\\r\\n \\r\\n\\r\\nHours: As needed weekly, including holidays\\r\\n\\r\\nRate: $21.00 Hourly\\r\\n\\r\\nHours: Saturday 11pm-7am Sunday 11pm to 7am Monday 11pm to 7am Tuesday 11pm to 7am\\r\\n\\r\\n \\r\\n\\r\\nMultilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
