Description

Summary/Objective The Sommelier manages the daily activities necessary for maintenance and promotion of the organization's wine collection. Identifies and purchases wines for the organization. Monitors the conditions of the wine cellar, ensuring optimal storage. Works with the kitchen staff to develop food and wine pairings. Recommends and serves wine to guests. Essential Functions · Create and update the wine list in coordination with chefs and the Food and Beverage Manager · Recommend food and wine pairings · Advise guests on wines based on their personal tastes and food choices · Inform guests about different varieties of wines and prices · Ensure wines are served at the right temperature and within the proper glassware · Store open bottles properly to maintain strong taste · Manage wine cellar and ensure inventory fully-stocked · Train wait staff on available wines · Negotiate purchase prices with vendors · Organize wine tasting days or “wine of the month” events · Ask guests for ID to verify legal drinking age · Comply with all health and safety regulations Competencies · Knowledgeable · Communication · Sales oriented Work Environment This position operates in a fast paced professional environment. Physical Demands The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift or move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move objects up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This position is full-time and regularly requires long hours, weekend work and holidays. Travel Some travel is expected for this position.
