Schedule: 7:00 p.m.-7:30 a.m. Every Other Weekend
FTE: 0.9
In an orientation situation and under supervision of a Registered Nurse or Physician, initially performs the less skilled work of clinical nursing practice and then progresses to independent performance of skilled nursing care procedures through performance evaluations. Performs ongoing observations, assessments, and Nursing actions to identify patient needs utilizing sound professional judgment and Graduate Nurse-level expertise. The Graduate Nurse role is organized and conducted as an orientation program with a maximum duration of forty-five (45) days. The Graduate Nurse will automatically promote to the classification of General Duty Nurse upon successful completion of the Michigan Registered Nurses Licensing Examination. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior. Works under the direct supervision of a departmental/unit manager or designee who assigns areas of responsibility and reviews results for compliance with established standards.
Responsibilities
Assists in completion of initial nursing assessment per hospital policy. Plans and implements written individual nursing care plans based on assessments. Updates and maintains care plans as appropriate. Assists in providing basic and technical nursing care such as physical examination procedures, urinary catheterizations, dressing changes, decubitus care, irrigations, suctioning, and monitoring of intravenous therapy. Observes aseptic techniques in performance of sterile procedures. (More complex nursing treatments must be checked off by Charge Nurse/Registered Nurse prior to independent performance.)3. Provides personal care for patients including bathing, skin care, and oral hygiene. Turns and positions patients. Conducts range of motion exercises as needed. Assists in ambulation. Collects and labels specimens. Performs specific specimen tests. Calculates intake and output. Takes and records vital signs. Documents and charts per hospital policy and procedure. Assists in admitting, discharging, and transferring patients. Makes and changes beds. Prepares patient remains after death per hospital policy and procedure. Participates in patient and family education and instruction including providing information in preparation of surgery and/or special procedures, discharge, and transfer. Assists in planning for patient disposition; e.g., discharge planning, patient/family training. Participates in policy and procedure interpretation, implementation, and evaluation regarding delivery of patient care and unit operations. Accesses computer/information systems for input and retrieval of information. Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react effectively, and treat (if appropriate) unique needs of patient age groups served. Performs other related duties as required. Utilizes new improvements and/or technology that relate to job assignment.
Qualifications
Graduation from a recognized School of Nursing. Certified BLS provider specializing in Basic Life Support credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross obtained within 18 months prior to hire date or job transfer date or Certified Instructor. Knowledge of professional Nursing theory and practice. Clinical competency in applying Nursing techniques to specific needs. Preferred experience in site area. Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relations with patients, facilities, physicians, team members, and other Medical Center employee. Necessary License/Certification Requirements:
Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS). Future and Ongoing Requirements:
The Michigan State Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses must be taken no later than forty-five (45) days from date of hire into this classification. Failure to do so will result in the individual's termination. Emergency Room Necessary Requirements:
Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certification within one year of employment. Successful completion of Advanced CRITICAL Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support, (PALS), and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI). Successful completion must be done within the first 6 months unless otherwise directed by management. Certifications must be maintained during life of employment (Department Specific).
