Reporting to the EVP of Corporate Services, the Legal Counsel is Buttcon’s in-house specialist for construction disputes and litigation. This role is responsible for leading the strategy, management, and resolution of all formal disputes including litigation, arbitration, adjudication, and complex claims. Working closely with Legal, Risk Management, and Operations, the Legal Counsel ensures the Buttcon Central Division is well-positioned in all disputes, minimizes legal exposure, and drives efficient, commercially sound outcomes. This position requires excellent organizational skills, strong negotiation abilities, and a deep understanding of construction law with 5+ years of litigation experience.</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\"> </span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-weight: bold\">Responsibilities</span></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Lead all active litigation matters, including construction liens, breach of contract claims, delay claims, and deficiency disputes.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Manage all aspects of litigation and provide pre-litigation counseling to internal teams.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Develop and execute litigation strategy in partnership with external counsel.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Oversee pleadings, affidavits, discoveries, expert reports, and trial/arbitration preparation.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Represent the company in mediations, arbitrations, and settlement negotiations.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Work with cross-functional partners across Buttcon, including Legal, Risk, Operations, and Construction teams, to provide counseling on existing and potential litigation matters and advise on litigation risk.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Provide clear, practical guidance on exposure, likelihood of success, and settlement positioning.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Support decision-making on whether to litigate, settle, or pursue alternative dispute resolution.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Provide legal input on high-risk claims before escalation.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Identify root causes of disputes and recommend operational or contractual improvements.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Support training for project teams on dispute avoidance and documentation best practices.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Act as a liaison between project leaders and external legal counsel for complex claims and litigation.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Management of various litigation files and developing and implementing strategies and solutions to mitigate risks.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Stay updated on industry trends and legal developments, providing insights to management to inform decision-making.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Perform additional duties as assigned to support the legal and risk management functions.</span></li>\n</ul>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-weight: bold\">Qualification &amp; Skills</span></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Law degree (LL.B. or J.D.)</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Current license in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">5+ years of construction litigation experience.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Deep expertise with construction liens and trust claims, delay and impact claims, and arbitration and mediation.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Experience managing external counsel and complex, multi-party disputes.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">Strong commercial acumen and ability to balance legal risk with business objectives.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt\">You are self-motivated, efficient and a “doer” and you have the ability to juggle competing projects and interests.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Inter, sans-serif;
