Job Summary Cable & Wire Technicians install, terminate, test, troubleshoot, and maintain copper and fiber optic cables for communications systems. Including the installation of pathways, and fabrication of cable trays and the running of cable through cable trays, racks, manholes, small, restricted spaces, and underground or through facilities. This is a represented staff position with the IBEW Union. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Install, splice, terminate, and test vertical backbone and horizontal fiber optic and copper cable systems. Including fusion splicing, pigtail splicing, and installing fiber connectors. Perform underground construction for cable path creation and modification. Install, splice, and terminate innerduct and multicell innerduct Comprehensive knowledge of fiber optic and copper cable terms and concepts, installation codes, practices, and procedures. Fabricate, assemble, and install cable pathways, including cable trays, through facilities, trenches, and manholes. Set up and operate directional boring and hard surface excavation equipment, trencher/backhoes, line truck, skid steer, and other equipment listed below. Operate and monitor gas detectors when working in manholes, trenches, or other confined spaces. Set up and operate water pumps for removing water in manholes, trenches, and confined spaces. Route copper and fiber optic cable through pathways while being cognizant of engineering and manufacturers’ bend radius and tensile strength of cable. Fabricate and install equipment racks, do core bores, bonding/grounding. Install fire stop devices for cable, such as but not limited to: plugs, grommets, collars, pathways, cable transit sleeves, and wraps. Set up, move, store, and operate confined space ventilation equipment, including air bottles and gas/air monitors. Using test equipment, manufacturer manuals, internal documentation, reference and operating procedures, and schematics, troubleshoot and isolate problems. Provide, update, and maintain all required documentation, reports, and logs, etc., manually or in electronic databases. Make recommendations to improve work quality, efficiencies, and productivity. Adhere to OSHA, NASA, Company, and customer safety requirements. May assist in training others. Requirements Required Minimum Education: Associate of Science\ or Technical Trade School\ in Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or related field Experience may be substituted for Education: 1.5 years of related experience is equivalent to 1 year of formal education. Required Years of Experience: Four (4) years related experience or successful completion of a State or Military approved bona fide work related apprenticeship program recognized by the US Department of Labor. Required Skills, Qualifications, Technical Experience, Certifications, etc.: This position is "journey level," meaning workers can start and finish a wide range of cable and wire activities independently. Employees working at this level typically require an understanding of electrical theory, exercising independent judgment in performing circuit diagnostics analysis. Workers must be able to read and have a comprehensive understanding of electronic schematics. Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to pass a NASA background investigation. Must be able to pass an initial and random drug testing. Must have and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License. Physical Requirements Requires working indoors and outdoors. Outdoor conditions may be cold and hot temperatures, high humidity, and windy conditions. Certain job assignments require special precautions and/or protective gear or clothing due to potential risk for such sources as moving machinery, chemicals, and electrical hazards, working from special rigging, working from heights, climbing ladders and other work platforms, and working in confined and small spaces restricting physical movement. Often requires lifting up to 35 50 pounds and working on uneven surfaces, and standing for long periods. Requires repetitive movement, bending, stooping, twisting, and working in awkward positions. Includes exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable. Lighting conditions may be inadequate in some work locations. Ability to recognize or interpret differences in wire and cable colors. Ability to receive and transmit auditory information using telecommunication or electronic devices. May require working 2nd or 3rd Shift. Equipment Used: Computer applications such as Microsoft Office®, work order/management systems, and scheduling software. Optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR), cable/fault locator, line truck, rodder truck, trenchers/backhoes, directional borers, copper and fiber optic splicing and termination tool kits, fiber optic blowers and pullers, fork lifts and skid steers, cable analyzers, bull wheels, duct rodders, projectiles, concrete cutters and saws, aerial personnel lifts, cable dolly, label maker and plugs, pulling eyes, cutters and splitters, pull tape, couplers, end caps and pulling swivels, generators and confined space ventilation devices such as fans and blowers.
