Description
1. * Maintains the standards of nursing care and implements policies and procedures of the Hospital and Nursing Department.
2. * Assesses the resident's condition and nursing needs, sets goals, and prescribes appropriate nursing
actions/interventions to meet those goals and the physical, psychological, social, and rehabilitative needs of
the residents, including discharge planning.
3. * Reports pertinent observations and reactions regarding residents to the appropriate person (i.e. physicians, DON) and records those observations accurately and concisely.
4. * Proficiently administers medication to and performs treatments on assigned residents.
5. * Initiates and accurately carries out physician orders in a timely manner, recognizing the need for STAT
responses.
6. * Directs, supervises and evaluates nursing care provided to residents when appropriate.
7. * Assists physicians with examination, treatments, special tests and procedures.
8. Participates in the economical utilization of supplies and ensures that equipment is maintained in a clean and
safe manner; appropriate charges for supplies and services utilized.
9. * Participates in the orientation of new personnel and training of students.
10. * Assists staff in giving care to residents or provides direct care when RN nursing skills and judgment are
required.
11. * Coordinates nursing care of residents when scheduled for therapy or procedures by other departments.
12. * Utilizes teaching opportunities with residents and families/responsible parties and properly documents teaching.
13. * Assists with or initiates emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in residents condition.
14. * Records and reports pertinent symptoms, reactions, and changes in the resident to the physician/PA, or
other relevant person and conveys appropriate information to next shift.
15. * Accurately monitors and records use of controlled drugs.
16. * Answers call lights; assists residents with activities of daily living.
17. * Assists with the admission, discharge, and transfer of residents.
18. * Demonstrates understanding of oral and written instructions, care plans and monthly summaries.
19. * Provides for proper resident identification.
20. * Provides concise, accurate documentation of all pertinent data.
21. * Transcribes and processes physician orders to applicable departments, and nursing department documents.
22. * Answers telephone, takes messages, communicates messages to appropriate person.
23. * Assists during emergency situations with "STAT" orders, paging codes, phone calls, etc. as needed.
24. Performs computer related tasks proficiently.
25. Files diagnostic and other reports/documents in appropriate resident chart.
26. Attends and leads admission conference.
27. Assists in assembly of new charts, maintaining current chart, entering resident information on the charts and
kardex including recopying medication sheets (when applicable) for resident charts.
28. * Accurately and effectively prepares and administers pharmacological agents.
29. * Accurately monitors IV therapy according to established policies and procedures.
30. * Adjusts equipment to correct settings for procedure/treatments for maximum results.
31. Assists in resident and family/caregiver education and/or care conferences and effectively documents
teaching/information.
32. Able to obtain satisfactorily clinical results by following policies and procedures.
33. * Recognizes emergency situations and responds effectively. Informs family/responsible party of change of
condition.
34. * Recognizes and understands psycho-social, spiritual, cultural and economic needs of residents and
provides/adjusts care as appropriate.
35. Demonstrates understanding of resident rights and responsibilities and provides care as appropriate.
36. Demonstrates correct technique of cleaning and/or assembling equipment, running controls on equipment.
37. Participates in keeping treatment/work areas clean and neat.
38. Presents self in professional manner, through appearance, communication and attitude.
39. Responds to external and internal customers in empathetic, caring manner.
40. Recognizes and reports unit problems/issues using established lines of authority.
41. Makes task and/or care related decisions, based on policies and procedures.
42. Assists in maintaining an environment that ensures appropriate supplies/medications/equipment/services
necessary for dept. functions.
43. * Maintains confidentiality of resident information and provides for resident privacy.
44. Demonstrates competency in clinical skills (obtaining Vital Signs, O2 sat., Pain Assessment, Dressing
Changes, Catheter Insertion, Intravenous Therapy, Assessment, Specimen Collection, ACLS Protocol, BLS
Protocol, Combitube Insertion, etc.)
45. * Assigns nursing care to staff in accordance with resident needs and staff capabilities.
46. * Assists staff with completion of Occurrence Reports, overtime slips, etc.
47. Knowledgeable about Pain Management and End of Life Care. Promotes Hospice when appropriate.
48. Takes an active role in the Quality Improvement program through involvement in:
a. Promoting the Q.I. program
b. Developing criteria for review to ensure quality resident care.
c. Monitoring results and supporting or directing implementation of corrective action that will secure positive
results.
49. Serves on committees as requested.
50. Other duties as assigned.
