Description
Our Thurston County HQHVSN clinic plays a vital role in the Pasado’s Safe Haven mission by providing high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter services. Through this work, we help reduce pet overpopulation, support local shelters and rescue partners, and improve the health and well-being of both animals and the communities they belong to.

The Thurston County HQHVSN Veterinarian provides medical leadership and oversight for a high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter clinic. This role is responsible for delivering safe, efficient surgical care while ensuring compliance with all medical, regulatory, and operational standards.
The DVM partners closely with the Regional Clinic Manager to optimize clinic flow and expand access to care for low-income pet owners, animal rescues, and community cats.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to,
Surgical Care & Medical Oversight:
Perform high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeries (minimum 35 per clinic day)
Ensure patient safety, humane handling, and adherence to best practices across all surgical stages
Oversee all medical care and clinical activities in compliance with WAC 246-935-040 and 246-935-060
Monitor patient condition, respond to complications, and manage post-operative care
Medical Operations:
Administer and supervise treatments including medications, vaccines, and other interventions
Manage controlled substances in compliance with state and federal regulations, including accurate logging and record-keeping
Maintain complete and accurate medical records
Update drug dosing charts and treatment protocols as needed
Maintain active WA State veterinary license and DEA registration
Adhere to AVMA, WSVMA, and applicable professional standards
Staff Training & Communication:
Train and mentor staff and volunteers on surgical support, animal care, and clinic protocols
Foster a respectful, collaborative, and professional work environment
Communicate clearly and compassionately with clients regarding procedures, risks, and post-operative care
Ensure thorough documentation of client interactions and medical notes
Clinic Operation:
Collaborate with the Regional Clinic Manager to optimize workflow and efficiency
Partner with LVTs and clinic staff to ensure smooth daily operations
Communicate patient priorities and status effectively to the team
Escalate operational, medical, or personnel concerns as appropriate
Maintain a clean, safe, and compliant facility (OSHA/L&I standards)
Support continuous improvement of clinic processes
Maintain flexibility in daily operations by adapting to evolving patient, client, and partner needs, as well as unexpected schedule or workflow changes
Be available for emergency consultations and urgent medical guidance outside of clinic hours (infrequent request but sometimes emergencies happen)
Compliance & Confidentiality:
Ensure compliance with all veterinary laws, regulations, and clinic policies
Maintain strict confidentiality of client, patient, staff, donor, and volunteer information
Equity, Access & Community Commitment:
Communicate with compassion, professionalism, and respect when serving diverse communities, including individuals experiencing financial hardship, housing instability, domestic violence, military-related challenges, disabilities, and language barriers.
Apply principles of equity and inclusion in decision-making, service delivery, and team collaboration.
Proactively identify and reduce barriers to care to improve access for underserved populations.
Deliver services without bias or judgment, avoiding assumptions about clients’ circumstances or lived experiences.
Demonstrate alignment with the mission and values of Pasado’s Safe Haven.
Support and promote trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs as a core component of clinic services.
Maintain flexibility and adaptability in response to changing clinic and community needs.
Education & Experience
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree
Active Washington State veterinary license
DEA license (or willingness to obtain; employer covers cost)
Minimum 1 year experience in a high-quality/high-volume spay/neuter setting
Experience with pediatric, cryptorchid, pyometra, and late-term pregnancy surgeries
Ability to perform additional procedures (e.g., enucleations, amputations, prolapse repair)
Preferred Qualifications
Valid Washington State Driver's License.
Required Knowledge & Abilities:
Ability to perform 35+ high-quality spay/neuter surgeries per day
Strong clinical judgment and ability to manage complications and emergencies
Knowledge of anesthetic monitoring and patient recovery
Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Commitment to animal welfare and reducing pet overpopulation
Ability to stand for extended periods and lift at least 40 lbs.
Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure
