Position Details: Randolph-Macon College invites applications for a full-time one-year position of Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of History to begin September 1, 2026. Institution Information: Randolph-Macon College is a nationally-recognized residential institution of about 1800 students located in Ashland, Virginia, just north of Richmond. Founded in 1830, the college offers a broad range of academic programs, including a graduate program in PA studies. The RMC curriculum, grounded in a liberal arts core, fosters intellectual growth and personal development, with a steadfast focus on helping students find and navigate pathways through college and to successful outcomes. With a commitment to inclusivity and hands-on learning, Randolph-Macon College provides an extraordinary educational experience – enhanced by exceptional athletic and extracurricular activities and supportive alumni – and prepares graduates for success in their chosen fields and in their lives. Through classroom experience and experiential projects, the Department of History trains students to think critically, research effectively, and write lucidly to help them both interpret the past and help shape the future as engaged public citizens. Our faculty members are active in research and writing about numerous historical time periods and regions of the globe, from the Americas to Europe, and the Middle East to Asia, and offer courses dealing with such varied aspects as women’s history, public history, history as portrayed in film and literature, ethnohistory, and transnational histories such as the Atlantic World. As such they also contribute to several programs outside the department including Archaeology, Asian Studies, Black Studies, and Education. Major/Essential Functions: Randolph-Macon College faculty teach, advise, conduct research and engage in scholarship, and serve the college and department. Primary teaching responsibilities will include teaching 20-22 credit hours per year (typically seven courses) in history and general education. History courses will include world history to/from 1500 and sophomore-level and advanced courses particular to the candidate’s modern global or transnational fields of expertise. Minimum Qualifications: PhD in global history (or a related field); we will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status and who will complete their degree by August 1, 2026; Prior experience and demonstrated effectiveness in teaching modern global history (c.1800–), or similar field, which may include transnational, international history transregional or “comparative global” fields that are primarily non-European in focus; Evidence of a commitment to undergraduate teaching and student engagement; and Experience working with students and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical methods that support all learners in reaching their maximum potential. Preferred Qualifications: Ability to offer courses in one or more of the following areas and/or subfields: Africa, Latin America and Caribbean, and South or East Asia; and An ability to integrate pedagogical approaches that complement the department’s public history offerings.
