Description
Description
Persons who are engaged to teach on a per-course basis hold adjunct appointments. When appropriate, the Provost’s Office may designate the individual as adjunct instructor, adjunct assistant professor, adjunct associate professor, or adjunct professor, depending on the individual’s qualifications. Persons holding adjunct appointments do not have voting rights, unless specifically stated, and are not on a track for the award of tenure. However, they are obliged to meet faculty standards with respect to classroom responsibilities and interactions with students.
Qualifications
For undergraduate courses, adjunct faculty must have a bachelors degree and a minimum of 18 hours of graduate course work in the discipline in which they will be teaching. Exceptions may be made on a case by case basis for candidate with an overwhelming body of experience for undergraduate work. Graduate programs will have their own requirements, some of which will be discipline specific.
Candidates for adjunct faculty positions must submit their dossier:
1) cover letter
2) curriculum vitae
3) contact information for references
4) unofficial transcripts for all attended institutions
5) statement of philosophy of teaching and their views on teaching in a liberal arts college
Searches for adjunct faculty members are initiated by the department chair in consultation with the Associate Provost, School Dean, and Executive Assistant to the Provost/Faculty HR Business Partner. Credentials for all candidates for adjunct positions must be reviewed by the Provost’s Office to ensure compliance with standards of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. The School Dean may authorize and submit the initial paperwork the hiring of the successful candidate, once credentials are confirmed received and reviewed in the Office of the Provost. Adjunct faculty are hired on a semester by semester appointment but should be reviewed annually if employment continues beyond one semester.
