Calling all lovers of adventure! Bend Park and Recreation District is hiring Outdoor Recreation Leaders to facilitate the popular Adventure Camp program.
About the job:
Outdoor Adventure Recreation Team Leads work with youth, primarily in Grades 5 to 9, leading part-day, full-day, and multi-day summer outdoor activities. Previous experience with raft guiding, rock climbing, mountain biking, working with groups of children, driving trailers, and wilderness first aid preferred. Other outdoor skills and passions a plus. Applicants should document in the application materials their range of outdoor skills, experiences, and relevant certifications.
A day in the life:
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Supervises participants in outdoor programs, helping to provide for a safe, positive and enjoyable experience. Assists in planning, instructing in and leading potentially "high risk" outdoor trips and activities which may include: whitewater rafting, mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing (including setting top-rope anchors and belaying), map and compass, paddle boarding and canoeing. Provides environmental education, cultural and natural history interpretation when appropriate. Maintains field records, trip reports and accident/incident reports. Communicates effectively with public including providing accurate information related to the program and responding to patron and parent questions and concerns. Provides logistical support and assists with recommending supplies/gear to purchase as needed. Sets up and breaks down equipment and supplies. Assists with the general upkeep and care of equipment, vans and facilities used. Drives van with trailer transporting participants to various sites. Responds to accidents and incidents according to procedures. Reports incidents of Child Abuse/Neglect observed by you or reported to you by a child. Commits to having FUN and maintaining a positive attitude Work Schedule:
Training will be throughout the first three weeks of June (weekdays only, 6/1-6/19). Mandatory river training days are 6/17 & 6/19, 6am-8pm. Shifts will be 35-40 hours/week, Monday-Thursday throughout the summer (6/22-8/21). Plus, optional camp clean-up days the final week of August.

"requirements_text": "What you'll need for success:\n Strong knowledge of:\n “high risk” outdoor activities and equipment\n effective teaching techniques and age appropriate activities for populations served;\n safety guidelines related to outdoor activities.\n Skill and Ability to:\n Lead, motivate and direct others;\n Exercise initiative and independent decision making;\n Demonstrate a high level of competency and expertise in program area;\n Actively participate in all activities\n Demonstrate organizational and time management skills\n Demonstrate planning and problem-solving skills;\n Communicate effectively with others both verbally and in writing\n Work cooperatively with others and create a positive, constructive, and respectful relationship with staff and the general public;\n Manage emergency/crisis situations\n Operate computer programs as well as staying current with new programs and operate common office equipment; and\n Work independently with minimum direction while also working as part of a team and collaborating with others.\n Work well and interact with participants with special needs; transfer, maneuver, and run after participants;\n Provide personal care (i.e., toileting, feeding, grooming); lift equipment and supplies;\n Wear the necessary and appropriate attire to actively participate in all activities;\n Communicate effectively with participants and their parents/guardians, other staff and the public; establish and maintain positive, respectful and cooperative relationships with all contacts.\n What we’re looking for:\n Education, Experience, and Training\n High school diploma or equivalent; AND\n One (1) year of experience in area of responsibility and/or performing similar tasks; OR\n Any satisfactory combination of education, experience and training.\n Preferences\n Familiar with the outdoor recreation scene in the Central Oregon region.\n Licenses and Certifications:\n First Aid/CPR or ability to obtain\n Possession of, or ability to obtain valid Oregon driver’s license within 30 days with an acceptable driving history as defined by district driving policy.\n 3 years of driving history and an acceptable driving history. Experience pulling trailers a plus.\n Supervision Received:\n Reports directly to a supervisor. Follows standard processes and procedures without supervision but confirms changes to standard practices and significant decisions in advance.\n Supervision Exercised:\n In assisting the Supervisor, provides limited direction and leadership to assigned staff, which may include directing and assigning work, adjusting work schedules, training, coaching and providing input into evaluating performance.\n Working Conditions:\n The following are working conditions, including environmental and physical demands, required for this classification.\n Duties are generally performed both indoors and outdoors.\n Hours vary depending upon program needs.\n The flow of work and character of duties involve normal mental and visual attention much or all of the time.\n Physical exertion includes frequent walking, bending and the ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds unassisted, pushing, pulling, and kneeling in order to set up or deliver equipment and supplies.\n Job stress may include dealing with crowds, uncooperative participants, difficult individuals, frequent exposure to childhood illnesses and periods of continuous demand.\n Selection Process:\n Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training. An offer of employment is contingent on the verification of credentials and other information required by Bend Park & Recreation District policies, including a background check and a driving history review when driving is required for position.\n Veteran Preference Status\n Under Oregon law, veterans who meet minimum qualifications for a position may be eligible for employment preference.
