An instructor serves with a major responsibility for customer service, classroom instruction, curriculum development, class/activity planning, and classroom behavior management. Adheres to Newport Sea Base health and safety standards.<span> </span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">You must be at least 16 years old, be certified in CPR and First Aid, and attain your CA Boater's Card upon being hired.</span></span><span> </span>Needs to be enthusiastic, patient, creative, and be able to engage youth effectively.<span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">On-the-water instructors must be able to safely swim and participate in water-based activities, with or without reasonable accommodation</span></span></span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">. </span></span>Must be comfortable communicating with children, teens, and parents. Reports to Program Director and Education/Aquatics Coordinator.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">*For Aquatics Instructors:<span> </span></span>American Red Cross Lifeguard certification recommended.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Responsibilities/Duties</span></p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prepare and deliver lesson plans/activities to youth in a well-planned, fun and engaging manner.</li>\n<li>Develop and write program curriculum for new and existing classes.</li>\n<li>Provide active supervision ensuring a safe environment for all youth.</li>\n<li>Keep merit badge records, take roll and track attendance, and turn rosters into lead supervisors regularly.</li>\n<li>Assist Lead Instructors in monitoring inventory of class supplies and program equipment.</li>\n<li>Ensure proper set-up, usage, and clean-up of the facility, equipment, and docks.</li>\n<li>Report program/equipment concerns to supervisor immediately.</li>\n<li>Teach youth water, boating and paddle craft safety.</li>\n<li>Be a positive role model and mentor to youth participants.</li>\n<li>Enforce student-discipline procedures according to Newport Sea Base policy.</li>\n<li>Communicate thoroughly and effectively with other program staff and Lead Instructors.</li>\n<li>Participate in scheduled staff trainings throughout the year including</li>\n<li>Be comfortable learning how to operate a Boston Whaler motorboat.</li>\n<li>Other duties as assigned by supervisor.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">The essential functions of this position can be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.</span></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Physical Requirements and Work Environment</span></span></p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions</li>\n<li>Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods</li>\n<li>Ability to lift and carry equipment (approximately 25–50 lbs)</li>\n<li>Ability to safely board, exit, and operate boats, docks, and waterfront equipment</li>\n<li>Ability to participate in water-based activities, including swimming (for aquatics roles)</li>\n<li>Regular exposure to water, sun, and outdoor environments</li>\n</ul>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Reports to:<span> </span></span>Program Director</p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Status:<span> </span></span>Part Time, Seasonal, Non-Exempt</p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Pay Scale:</span><span> </span>$16.90-$18.00</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">*Also hiring for Spring season</span></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Hours</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">June-August (Summer Camp)</span>                   <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">September-May (School Year)</span></p>\n<p>*Max. 20-40 hours per week (Mon-Fri)     *Max. 10-20 hours per week (Weekdays and Sat)</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Summer Camp Dates &amp; Hours:</span></p>\n<p>June 1-August 14; Monday through Friday Varies, maximum-40 hrs per week</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Mandatory Summer Training:</span></p>\n<p>Track A - June 1-5 (8a-4p)</p>\n<p><em>OR</em></p>\n<p>Track B (only if still in school during Track A) Alternative abridged training available for those still in school</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Equal Opportunity Employer</span></span></p>\n<p>Scouting America, Orange County Council is an equal opportunity employer and considers all qualified applicants without regard to disability or any other protected status.</p>",
