Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
Design, develop, and industrialize advanced optical fiber manufacturing platforms with a focus on electrical systems, controls architecture, and automation integration. Drive root-cause understanding of process and equipment limitations and translate them into robust control system solutions for glass and fiber manufacturing equipment.
Key Responsibilities
• Serve as the electrical and controls engineering lead for glass and fiber manufacturing equipment development and upgrades
• Define control system architectures for glass and fiber making process equipment
• Integrate process requirements into control systems including motion, thermal, fluid, and process control
• Support prototype development, equipment build, commissioning, and plant deployment
• Work in a global cross-functional team across process, mechanical, and controls domains
• Design and integrate PLC, HMI, SCADA, and motion control systems into manufacturing platforms
• Develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and documentation
• Define and implement control logic, I/O architecture, fail-safe modes, and recovery strategies
• Support equipment installation, startup, and commissioning
• Troubleshoot automation and control system issues
• Collaborate with mechanical, process, and vendor teams for system integration
• Develop and improve control strategies (PID, advanced control) for process stability
• Lead system upgrades for productivity, reliability, and cost improvements
• Support global deployment and standardization of control systems
Experiences/Education - Required
• BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field
• 5–10+ years of experience in industrial controls, automation, or manufacturing systems
• Experience leading control system development or integration projects
• Strong knowledge of industrial control systems including PLC, HMI, SCADA, and motion control
• Hands-on experience with PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Omron, etc.)
• Strong understanding of electrical systems including power distribution, motor control, and Variable Frequency Drives (VFD)
• Experience designing electrical schematics and control panels (AutoCAD / EPLAN)
• Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, EtherCAT)
• Understanding of machine safety principles (ISO 13849, risk assessment)
• Experience integrating controls with mechanical, thermal, and process systems
• Strong troubleshooting skills in automated manufacturing environments
• Ability to work hands-on with technicians and equipment
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
• Proactive problem-solving with strong ownership mindset
• Ability to translate complex technical concepts into practical engineering solutions
Experiences/Education - Desired
• Experience with glass or fiber manufacturing processes or high-temperature continuous manufacturing systems
• Experience with advanced control methods (PID tuning, model-based control)
• Familiarity with SCADA systems (Ignition, iFix, FTView) for monitoring and data integration
• Experience working with system integrators and equipment suppliers
• Experience with robotics systems (e.g., FANUC, ABB)
• Experience with machine vision systems for inspection and automation
• Knowledge of programming languages (Python, C#, MATLAB)
• Project management or technical leadership experience
