E.L. Haynes provides a rigorous and engaging college preparatory curriculum for students in grades Pre-K through 12. Our instructional program provides intensive learning experiences that deepen understanding at all grade levels so that every student is prepared to become kind and curious community members, lifelong learners, and leaders of social justice.

Starting salary range: $65,000 - $110,500
You will:
Plan and deliver exceptional instruction based on E. L. Haynes' rigorous academic standards, curriculum framework, graduate profile, and student assessment data;
Conduct and analyze ongoing assessments of student performance;
Collaborate with other teachers, including special education and ELL teachers to implement student supports;
Create a positive and supportive classroom culture and environment that puts relationships with students first;
Engage families and caregivers in their students' success;
Be an active member of the school community, attending and participating in school events outside of regular school hours, and completing other duties as assigned.
The Elementary STEM Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging, inquiry-based science instruction for students in the lower elementary grades while supporting schoolwide STEM integration and mathematical growth. This educator fosters curiosity, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving through hands-on learning experiences that connect science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to real-world applications. This role is central to building Haynes 3.0, focusing on academic readiness and exposure to STEAM+ pathways.
Primary Responsibilities
Science Instruction
Plan and deliver standards-aligned science instruction for lower elementary students.
Create engaging, hands-on learning experiences that promote inquiry, experimentation, and discovery in alignment with NGSS standards using our Amplify Science curriculum.
Foster a classroom environment that encourages curiosity, collaboration, and scientific thinking.
Assess student learning regularly and use data to inform instruction and provide targeted support.
Partner with the Upper Elementary Science teacher to ensure instructional science coherence across grades K-5.
Math Intervention & Extension
Provide targeted math intervention for students needing additional support in foundational skills and concepts.
Facilitate enrichment and extension opportunities for students ready for advanced mathematical challenges.
Use student data to identify needs, monitor progress, and adjust instructional supports.
Collaborate with teachers to expand enriching opportunities for students in mathematics.
Partner closely with the Elementary Math Coach to ensure rich, targeted, hands-on math programming across the Elementary School.
STEM Integration & Cross-Disciplinary Work
Collaborate with classroom teachers to design and implement interdisciplinary STEM experiences connected to literacy, math, social studies, and the arts.
Lead or support project-based learning opportunities that integrate multiple content areas.
Help build schoolwide enthusiasm and capacity for STEM learning through modeling, coaching, and collaboration.
Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities
Work closely with grade-level teams, instructional leaders, and intervention staff to support student achievement.
Support Tag Labs partnerships to integrate coding, web design, and digital literacy into the elementary curriculum.
Participate in professional development, collaborative planning meetings, and school initiatives.
Maintain strong communication with families regarding student progress and STEM learning opportunities.
Support a positive, inclusive, and academically rigorous school culture.
Partner with the Upper Elementary Science Teacher on hands-on science projects that align with the school-wide STEAM framework.
Collaborate on cross-campus science coherence to ensure vertical alignment from ES to HS.
Qualifications
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Science, STEM-related field, or related area required.
Valid teaching certification preferred.
Experience teaching elementary students, particularly in science and/or mathematics.
Strong understanding of inquiry-based instruction and student-centered learning practices.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Ability to differentiate instruction to meet a wide range of student needs.
Flexibility, creativity, and a collaborative mindset.
Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and external partners.
Commitment to equity, inclusion, and high expectations for all students.
Preferred Skills & Attributes
Passion for STEM education and innovation in teaching and learning.
Experience with project-based learning and interdisciplinary curriculum design.
Two or more years of teaching experience in an urban setting;
A clear understanding of standards-based curriculum and standards-based assessment;
An ability to build a positive and supportive classroom culture;
Used models and exemplars to drive instruction; and
Strong collaboration skills in order to ensure student success.
You might also have:
A Washington, DC teaching certification;
A strong background in differentiated and student-centered instruction;
Experience in hands-on learning such as experiential learning or project-based learning;
Experience in data-driven instruction;
Verbal or written proficiency in Spanish; and
An advanced degree in education or your subject area.
