Description SUMMARY: Registered Nurses supervise the work of the Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nurse Aides and Ward Clerks and works cooperatively with all hospital departments. The RN provides professional nursing care to patients according to established procedure and coordinates care planning with other disciplines. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes the following, but is not limited to any other duties or tasks that may be assigned: maintains established departmental policy and procedures, objectives, continuous quality improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards and other administrative duties as assigned documents initial nursing histories, assesses patient’s conditions and develops individual care plans for patients administers and controls narcotics and medications assists in formulating and screening Quality Assurance criteria and providing in-service training for staff evaluates outcomes of patient care, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as necessary to ensure optimal patient care monitors, maintains and ensures accuracy of recording patient care documentation maintains all required reports, records, statistics, etc maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with hospital standards maintains patient records and charts to ensure an accurate record of the patients’ medical treatment observes emotional stability of patients’ expresses interest in their progress and prepares for continuing care after discharge assists other members of the nursing team and/or other disciplines assists physicians with examinations, procedures and other processes related to direct patient care demonstrates sensitivity to patient comfort and safety arranges for patient’s ordered diagnostic and therapeutic services monitors medical condition of the patient and reports changes to the appropriate personnel enhances professional growth and development through participation in education programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops attends meetings as required ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment cooperates with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintain good employee relations and interdepartmental objectives orients, instructs and trains assigned personnel demonstrates competency and professionalism in performing the overall patient care and supervisory responsibilities of the Registered Nurse position assists with orientation of new personnel to the unit Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successful, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Prefer a minimum of one year clinical experience in a hospital setting. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: A current Registered Nurse license must be maintained in the state of Kansas. Must be CPR certified. Current certifications in the following courses are preferred, if not, the Registered Nurse will be expected to obtain them during employment: ACLS, TNCC, PALS, NRP, STABLE. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Provide accurate, concise and effective oral and written communication. Promote positive environment conductive to teamwork, innovation and positive morale. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, patients, and the general public. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractures, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems that deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential function. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance; and stop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Prolonged and extensive or considerable standing and walking may be required. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching may also be required. Motor coordination and manual dexterity are required. This position may require 12 hour shifts for coverage and overtime may be required for staffing need requirements. The employee is regularly required to lift or move up to 25 pounds, frequently required to lift or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally required to lift or move up to 100 pounds. Lifting may include supplies and equipment with occasional lifting/positioning/transferring of patients. Must be able to carry out procedures outlined. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable persons with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The employee may be exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, illnesses) and have contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances.
