Job Title: Teamsters Paralegal II
Department: District Attorney's Office
Starting Salary: $21.27 Hourly/$44,241.60 Annually
The Dauphin County District Attorney's Office is currently accepting applications for the full-time position of Teamsters Paralegal II for one of their criminal court teams. The Paralegal II performs paraprofessional work that is time-bound and confidential to assist and support deputy district attorneys in their prosecution of criminal cases before the magisterial district judges and common pleas court judges of the Dauphin County criminal courts. The incumbent works under the direction of the deputy district attorneys. The employee in this position is responsible for but not limited to performing the following essential functions listed below. This is a union position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:
1. Researches criminal records, dispositions and driving records using JNET/CLEAN and UJS Portal.
2. Types, edits, formats, proofreads and files motions, answers, memoranda, briefs, proposed court orders, and other filings on behalf of the deputy district attorneys.
3. Analyzes prior records, including multi-state convictions and driving records to properly calculate sentencing guidelines in preparation for submission to the judges of the Court of Common Pleas for sentencing of criminal defendants.
4. Collects laboratory test results and reports for criminal cases involving drugs, guns, fingerprints, serology, DNA, etc.
5. Investigates case files to develop and file criminal information at the direction of and on behalf of deputy district attorneys.
6. Prepares, redacts, and serves initial discovery packets to defense counsel and pro se defendants under the direction of and on behalf of deputy district attorneys.
7. Requests additional discovery materials such as medical records, MVRs, call recordings, and transcripts on behalf of the deputy district attorneys.
8. Assists deputy district attorneys with research of details concerning closed out-of-county and out-of-state cases in preparation for trial.
9. Responds to formal disposition requests from other county and state law enforcement agencies by telephone, email, facsimile, or written correspondence.
10. Attends team meetings, pretrial conferences, court proceedings, interviews, trainings and seminars as required.
11. Performs any other paraprofessional duties as assigned by the deputy district attorneys.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Works indoors in adequate workspace, lighting, ventilation and temperatures.
2. Normal indoor exposure to noise, disruptions, stress, dust and dirt.
3. May travel occasionally to perform essential position functions.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL CONDITIONS:
1. Must possess ability to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions.
2. Must be able to sit for long periods throughout the workday, with intermittent periods of standing and walking and occasional periods of bending, twisting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping and reaching as necessary to carry out job duties.
3. Dexterity requirements range from coordinated movements of fingers/hands for computer, to simple movements of feet/legs/torso as necessary to carry out job duties.
4. Sedentary work, with occasional lifting/carrying of objects with a maximum weight of ten (10) pounds.
5. Must be able to cope with the physical and mental stress of the position.
6. Must be able to move frequently throughout the workday as needed to carry out essential job duties.
7. Must be able to pay close attention to detail and concentrate on work.
8. Must be able to multitask and prioritize workload and meet strict deadlines.
9. Must be able to work as part of a team as well as individually with minimal supervision.
10. Must be able to view, listen to, analyze, and relay sensitive information that may, at times, be graphic.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in paralegal, legal assistant or criminal justice studies, a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or a bachelor’s degree with a certificate in paralegal studies.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
1. A minimum of two years of experience as a paralegal, legal assistant or other position within the criminal justice system is strongly preferred.
2. Experience working in a government office is preferred.
3. A favorable background check is required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
1. Must possess rudimentary knowledge of office automation.
2. Must be able to speak and understand the English language and to follow oral and written instructions.
3. Must possess knowledge in the Pennsylvania Crimes Code, Rules of Criminal Procedure, Vehicle Code, and the criminal justice community in the Central Pennsylvania area.
4. Must possess interpersonal skills to interface with other members of the criminal justice community and Dauphin County government.
5. Must possess the ability to maintain confidentiality regarding criminal justice information reviewed as part of working in the Office of the District Attorney and with access to state criminal history systems.
6. A favorable background check is required.
