Position Overview:
Teaches, advises and mentors students, evaluates student performance, and maintains department and student records in accordance with university policies. Adheres to the educational philosophy of the university. Works in a collaborative manner with colleagues and professional peers. Participates in university meetings that relate specifically to faculty. Serves on department, college, and university committees as needed. Prepares departmental reports as requested. Engages in teaching, service, and scholarly and/or creative activities as defined by the tenure and promotion policy in the UCO Employee and Faculty Handbook. Teaching, research, departmental/school and university service is expected. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track temporary position.
College/Department Overview:
The College of Liberal Arts currently has 113 full-time and 82 part-time faculty in eight academic departments and/or schools. The college serves the university's core curriculum programs and enrolls more than 2,000 undergraduate students and more than 200 graduate students in 34 undergraduate and 17 graduate majors.
The UCO Mass Communication Department offers four undergraduate majors, nine minors, and one graduate program. For further information see our website at http://mcom.uco.edu/ .
Position Announcement:
The Department of Mass Communication invites applications for a One-Year, Full-Time Temporary Artist in Residence (2026-2027) to serve as the E.K. Gaylord Endowed Chair of Journalism Ethics. The individual chosen for this role will be eligible for annual renewals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop and lead ethics activities, specific to professional expertise and beneficial to the university and community as determined by the department.
Teach a 3–3 schedule (9 credit hours per semester) including:
The Conference Planning course, during which students plan the annual media ethics conference.
Most, if not all, of the media ethics courses in the department.
Other courses as assigned.
Serve as the director of the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame.
Serves as a resource to The Vista student newspaper.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree is preferred, but a candidate with an earned bachelor’s degree and professional journalism experience may be considered.
Physical Demands:
Reasonable accommodations (in accordance with ADA requirements) may be made, upon request, to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
Required Documents:
Online faculty application with cover letter, curriculum vitae, list of three professional references, and degree transcripts for all degrees are required. Additional documentation may be requested.
