Description
This is a unique opportunity to work in a distinctive setting, contributing to the preservation of New Zealand’s tram heritage. MOTAT is looking for a someone with a mechanical and engineering background to join the Tramways Heritage team. Based in the workshop, you’ll work within a small team with volunteers to keeping MOTAT’s trams operational all year round. Your hands-on mechanical experience will be used when servicing and maintaining trams, while experience in fitting, turning, milling, and welding are essential for manufacturing tram parts.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
An understanding of heavy engineering with an aptitude for carrying out mechanical work with a relevant trade qualification.
Experience operating a range of workshop machinery.
Demonstrated ability to plan work, manage budgets and coordinate others.
Basic computer literacy.
Full driver’s licence, forklift licence desirable, but not a deal breaker.
Experience in doing body and panel work, painting, and woodwork would be an advantage.
Most of our trams are run on DC power, so some electrical experience would be beneficial.
An interest in tram heritage artefacts/museums would be beneficial.
This role is a 40-hour working week, working Monday to Friday. In addition, you may be required to work on the third Sunday (Live Day) of every month, if required, and you will take an alternative day off during that week.
