Description

Compensation will be made up of a competitive base salary as well as bonus potential determined by your own individual performance and the performance of the organization overall. About ESi Engineering Systems Inc. (ESi) is a multidisciplinary engineering and scientific investigation firm that helps clients solve complex technical problems across a broad range of industries. Our consultants include mechanical, civil, materials, electrical, biomedical, chemical, structural, human factors, and safety engineers, as well as scientists and technical specialists with deep expertise in accident reconstruction, failure analysis, product and system evaluation, and risk assessment. We work with law firms, insurers, manufacturers, and corporations on projects involving transportation incidents, industrial equipment, consumer products, structures and infrastructure, environmental and fire investigations, and human performance and safety. ESi’s collaborative approach, extensive laboratory and testing capabilities, and strong technical rigor allow us to deliver clear, defensible analyses grounded in real‑world data and scientific methodology. Candidates joining ESi become part of a diverse, highly experienced team that integrates expertise across disciplines to understand how and why incidents occur and to help clients make informed decisions. Job Description: Working in a highly collaborative environment, this job involves a wide variety of incident investigations, including accident reconstruction. Projects require fieldwork, investigation, analysis, product testing, report development and legal testimony. This position is intended for a human factors scientist or engineer who will apply human performance principles to real-world environments, with a substantial focus on premises safety and slip, trip, and fall incident analysis. The consultant will investigate how pedestrians perceive, interpret, and respond to features of the built environment, assess walkway and environmental conditions, and evaluate the influence of visibility, lighting, warnings, and decision-making on incident outcomes. The candidate will also conduct human factors-related analyses involving consumer products, occupational tasks, transportation accidents, or warnings and instructions. The position includes both litigation support and non-litigation consulting, such as safety and risk assessments, potential participation in safety standards activities, and involvement in research that advances best practices in human factors and safety. The consultant will conduct field work, interpret incident-related materials, and prepare clear, written and verbal technical reports. Prior expert testimony experience is desired. Work will include review of existing scientific literature and standards; and the performance or supervision of original research to obtain and analyze relevant technical data. The candidate will interface with internal ESi consultants and directly with clients, assessing client needs, establishing performance timelines, developing budgets, and explaining complex technical concepts in lay terms. Key Responsibilities: Investigate slip, trip, and fall incidents by evaluating pedestrian behavior, walkway characteristics, environmental conditions, visibility, lighting, and warnings or instructions in settings such as retail, hospitality, and other public access areas. Conduct field inspections and collect human‑factors‑relevant data such as tribometer-based coefficient of friction measurements, calibrated photography or videography, and documentation of environmental and behavioral conditions. Review and apply walkway safety standards, for example ASTM, ANSI, and NFSI documents, as well as human factors research and applicable codes or guidance materials. Analyze incident materials such as surveillance video, maintenance or inspection records, witness statements, facility documents, and product or equipment information to form clear and defensible conclusions based on human performance science. Perform human factors analyses outside of premises safety, including evaluations of consumer products, occupational tasks, and warnings or instructions, as needed, to support a diverse range of investigations. Prepare clear, technically rigorous written reports for clients, claims professionals, and legal audiences. Communicate results through client meetings, presentations, and direct technical discussions. As part of a team, perform safety and risk assessments for clients. Support research efforts that advance understanding in human factors, premises safety, or risk mitigation, with opportunities to publish or present findings. Collaborate with professionals from architecture, civil and structural engineering, biomechanics, materials science, mechanical engineering, and other disciplines. Coordinate project tasks including planning, documentation, client communication, and timely execution of investigative activities. Travel to inspection sites and client locations as needed. Prepare exhibits with ESi’s visualization group to clearly communicate complex engineering concepts. Perform other duties as assigned.
