Description
The Senior Software Engineer – IBM i plays a critical role within the Operations Technology team, supporting and evolving a portfolio of legacy IBM i / AS400 applications that underpin core freight and warehouse operations. They maintain highly stable, long-running systems that have been in continuous production for over two decades and remain essential to business continuity. They bring deep expertise in RPG development, strong analytical skills for navigating undocumented codebases, and the ability to implement low-risk, high-impact changes. They work closely with the Operations Development Manager and collaborate cross-functionally with engineering teams to support ongoing system integration efforts. While the primary focus remains on legacy system support, the role offers exposure to modern technologies such as REST APIs and microservices. The ideal candidate thrives in complex, under-documented environments and is passionate about stabilizing and improving mission-critical systems.
Responsibilities
Own of a portfolio of long-running IBM i / AS400 production applications with minimal or no existing documentation Analyze, interpret, and modify legacy RPG codebases (including RPG III and RPG/400) to resolve defects and enhance functionality Respond to production incidents, troubleshoot operational issues, and support time-sensitive requests from internal stakeholders Perform detailed impact analysis prior to implementing changes to minimize production risk and downstream disruption Write, optimize, and maintain DB2 SQL for reporting, data extraction, and system integrations Develop and maintain Service Programs and Modules within the ILE framework, adhering to established conventions Support and extend Data Queue-based messaging solutions for asynchronous processing workflows Create and maintain clear technical documentation to improve long-term system maintainability and knowledge sharing Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Java / Spring Boot microservices teams, to support integration efforts Participate in API integration touchpoints and support modernization initiatives as needed Provide technical mentoring and guidance to team members with less IBM i experience Support off-hours or weekend production issues as business needs require All other duties as assigned to meet evolving business needs
Qualifications
Education: Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field from an accredited college or university preferred; Equivalent practical experience, coding programs/bootcamps considered in lieu of degree Certification/Licensure: Relevant IBM i, RPG, or database certifications preferred but not required Experience: 7+ years of hands-on IBM i / AS400 development experience in a production environment Expertise in RPG IV / ILE RPG and free-format RPGLE; working knowledge of RPG III and RPG/400 in legacy environments Strong CL / CLLE scripting experience, including job control, data areas, and error handling Advanced SQL experience on DB2 for i, including complex joins, embedded SQL, and stored procedures Deep understanding of ILE architecture, including Service Programs, Modules, binding directories, and activation groups Experience with Data Queues and asynchronous messaging patterns Familiarity with REST API integrations and modern application architectures Exposure to JT400 / JDBC-based Java-to-IBM i integration patterns Familiarity with IBM i security, object authority, and user profile management Experience working alongside microservices / Spring Boot development teams Experience using Git or similar version control tools for IBM i development Demonstrated discretion and confidentiality in handling and protecting sensitive information. Technical: Proficient with common office technologies, including Windows PCs, Microsoft O365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and web conferencing (Teams, Zoom, Webex, etc.) Environment: Comfort commuting to/from and working in a 100% on-site setting (listed in this posting), with travel for related meetings/events.
