    "ExternalDescriptionStr": "<p>Human Resources announces an opening for a 1.0 FTE Grounds Mechanic I/II, 1st Shift. This is 12-months, Grade M-8/9 position located at the Trades Center with the Maintenance Office.<br>\n NOTE regarding work schedule/shift assignment: The work schedule and shift are subject to change, depending upon<br>\n the needs of APS. applicant hired for a position in this class is hired for the position, not the work schedule or shift<br>\n assignment. Once hired, an employee may be reassigned to another schedule or shift at the discretion of APS.<br>\n RESPONSIBILITIES:<br>\n ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (the following may not include all duties performed):<br>\n Uses sheet metal and/or wrought iron to fabricate parts for projects.&nbsp;<br>\n Trims and prunes shrubbery and trees using power and hand tools, operates tractors, backhoes and other vehicles<br>\n to remove brush and grade and prepares grounds for seeding; seeds and plants shrubs, flowers, etc.; cuts up and<br>\n removes fallen trees; and performs other landscape maintenance duties. Installs, repairs and replaces playground<br>\n equipment, both indoor and outdoor basketball goals, and other sports and recreation equipment; spreads sand or<br>\n wood chips.<br>\n Operates jackhammers, bobcats, asphalt rollers, asphalt and concrete mixers, to grade and prepare sites, prepare<br>\n asphalt or concrete, and install or repair roads, sidewalks, shed pads, etc.<br>\n Digs ditches, post holes and other excavations, using backhoe and other powered or hand tools and equipment,<br>\n and removes broken pipes, install signs or post, and prepares ground for work by, others trades mechanics.<br>\n Lays or assists other mechanics in laying bricks, blocks, and tiles to construct walls and flooring, operates power<br>\n cutting tools to cut door and window spaces.<br>\n Moves furniture, equipment and supplies to and from school buildings.&nbsp;<br>\n Other duties as assigned.&nbsp;<br>\n EXPERIENCE:<br>\n REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES INCLUDE:<br>\n Good knowledge and ability to operate a broad range of construction and landscaping vehicles and power and hand<br>\n tools and equipment.<br>\n Good knowledge of the common procedures, materials, hazards and safety precautions associated with grounds<br>\n maintenance and construction activities, and ability to respond appropriately in hazardous situations.<br>\n Good knowledge of national, state and local codes and regulations applicable to this grade.<br>\n Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions, and to read and interpret plans, diagrams drawings, prints,<br>\n schematics, etc.<br>\n Ability to use arithmetic computations to measure, calculate quantities and cost, etc., and ability to maintain records.<br>\n Ability to develop and maintain good leadership and interpersonal relationships. QUALIFICATIONS:<br>\n MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:<br>\n Completion of high school), including some courses in Industrial arts and/or shop mechanics, and completion of<br>\n formal or on-the-job training equivalent to an apprenticeship in grounds maintenance and/or welding.<br>\n Considerable progression work in the grounds-keeping and construction trades; or any equivalent education and<br>\n experience to fully meet the requirements of the job.&nbsp;<br>\n LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:&nbsp;<br>\n Possession of an appropriate, valid vehicle operator’s license; if required by assignment<br>\n A Commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required to operate certain trucks and construction equipment. A CDL<br>\n license is preferred<br>\n Eligible for M-09 is preferred<br>\n NOTE: All APS employees authorized to drive APS vehicles are subject to either the Omnibus Transportation Act<br>\n drug and alcohol procedures (if required to possess a CDL) or the Arlington Public School Alcohol and Drug testing<br>\n procedures (if CDL is not required).&nbsp;<br>\n PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES: Possession of the strength and dexterity and fine and gross motor skills to perform all required<br>\n tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy objects, assembling and dissembling scaffold and equipment, and operating<br>\n and/or utilizing all tools, equipment and vehicles endemic to the trade. Work requires significant standing, bending,<br>\n stooping, lifting, working in tiring positions and working from ladders or scaffolds. HAZARDS/UNUSUAL<br>\n DEMANDS: Works in a wide range of climatic conditions, including severe snow and storm conditions. Exposure to<br>\n fumes, dust, sparks and smoke and to loud noise and vibrations requires use of safety goggles, ear plugs, masks, safety<br>\n shoes, back braces, welding shields, hard hats and gloves. Work involves climbing trees, ladders, scaffolds, and into other<br>\n high places.
