Description

Corporate Controller - Construction Accounting Job Overview Red Cedar Construction Services is seeking an experienced  Corporate Controller to join our finance and accounting leadership team. This role will oversee, coordinate, and supervise accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, job costing, and administrative finance functions across a fast-paced construction and project-based business environment. The Corporate Controller will work closely with the Chief Financial Officer and executive leadership to maintain accurate financial records, manage month-end and year-end close processes, support forecasting and budgeting, and help establish scalable financial policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems. This position plays a key role in ensuring financial accuracy, operational efficiency, cost control, and compliance as the company continues to grow. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting knowledge, a solid understanding of GAAP, proven leadership experience, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a high-volume construction environment. Experience in construction accounting, homebuilding, general contracting, build-to-rent, multifamily construction, job costing, work-in-progress reporting, and project-based accounting is highly preferred. This role requires comfort working with executive leadership, accounting staff, operations teams, project managers, vendors, banking partners, auditors, and external stakeholders. We are also looking for someone who is process-minded and technology-forward, with the ability to identify opportunities to improve efficiency through better systems, automation, AI tools, reporting enhancements, and workflow improvements. Experience with  QuickBooks Enterprise , construction accounting systems, Smartsheet, BuildPro, Brixx, or similar platforms is strongly preferred. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Direct and supervise accounting staff to ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and company policies and procedures. Lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, including preparation and review of financial statements and supporting schedules. Prepare and/or oversee monthly financial reports, including budget-to-actual analysis, project cost reporting, cash flow reporting, work-in-progress reporting, and management review packages. Work closely with the CFO and executive leadership to update business plans, budgets, forecasts, and financial models. Establish, implement, and improve financial processes, policies, procedures, internal controls, and reporting systems. Support accounting operations for construction, build-to-rent, multifamily, residential construction, and related project-based business activities. Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, vendor payments, bill pay processes, and expense controls. Manage and review job cost accounting, project cost tracking, work-in-progress reporting, pay applications, draws, change orders, and revenue recognition processes, as applicable. Ensure accurate coding, classification, and allocation of costs across jobs, cost centers, departments, projects, and entities. Review project profitability, margin trends, cost variances, committed costs, over/under billings, and other construction accounting metrics. Facilitate workflow between shared services, accounting, operations, project management, and executive leadership. Coordinate internal and external audit requests and support tax, banking, insurance, and compliance-related reporting. Oversee treasury management, bank reconciliations, debt reporting, cash management, and cash flow planning processes. Support financial strategy, including risk management, cost controls, margin analysis, process improvements, and operational efficiency initiatives. Provide high-level financial reporting, analysis, and recommendations to leadership. Ensure compliance with applicable statutory, tax, accounting, and financial regulations. Partner with leadership to improve reporting visibility, strengthen controls, and support data-driven decision-making. Manage accounting activity across multiple entities, ensuring accuracy, consistency, intercompany alignment, and timely reporting. Identify opportunities to streamline accounting workflows through improved systems, automation, AI tools, reporting templates, and technology-driven process improvements. Manage, mentor, train, and develop accounting and finance team members. Delegate work based on employee abilities, skills, workload, and business priorities. Evaluate employee performance and provide coaching, feedback, and development opportunities. Identify opportunities for team growth, training, cross-training, and process improvement. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Skills & Qualifications Strong knowledge of accounting, finance, financial reporting, and internal controls. Mastery of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Experience managing accounting functions within a project-based, construction, homebuilding, or multi-entity business environment. Strong understanding of job costing, project accounting, work-in-progress reporting, cost-to-complete analysis, revenue recognition, and construction-related financial processes preferred. Proven ability to lead, train, mentor, and motivate a team. Demonstrated managerial and leadership experience with a successful record of setting and achieving goals. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Ability to work efficiently, maintain accuracy, and remain composed in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Excellent attention to detail and commitment to timely, accurate financial reporting. Strong communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with operations, project management, accounting staff, vendors, and executive leadership. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel. Experience with QuickBooks Enterprise required or strongly preferred. Experience with construction accounting, ERP, project management, or job costing systems preferred. Experience with Smartsheet, BuildPro, Brixx, QuickBooks Enterprise, or similar systems preferred. Experience using AI, automation, reporting tools, or technology solutions to improve accounting efficiency, accuracy, and workflow visibility preferred. Experience with mergers, acquisitions, integrations, or multi-entity accounting preferred. Ability to evaluate existing processes, identify gaps, and implement scalable accounting procedures and controls. Strong understanding of intercompany transactions, shared services accounting, cost allocations, and entity-level reporting preferred. Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field required. Active CPA license preferred. Minimum of 8 years of progressive accounting or finance experience required. Minimum of 5 years of direct management experience required. Construction, homebuilding, build-to-rent, multifamily construction, or general contracting experience strongly preferred. Public accounting experience highly preferred. Multi-entity accounting experience preferred. Experience with QuickBooks Enterprise, construction accounting platforms, ERP systems, or job costing software preferred. Schedule Monday-Friday, standard daytime hours; 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM EST. Occasional weekend work may be required. Job Type Full-time position, averaging 40 hours per week. Compensation $120,000-$150,000 base.
