Full Time, Four Years

July 12, 2026

Long-term
Site Information:
Kumamoto is one of the original centers of the Lutheran Church in Japan, with ministry in the area going back more than 100 years. There are 5 Lutheran congregations within the city limits, plus many others in the Kumamoto region. There are two Lutheran middle/senior high schools, one Lutheran college, and a number of Lutheran social service institutions. Thus, despite that small percentage of Christians in Japan (less than 1 percent), the Kumamoto region has been heavily influenced by the Lutheran church.
Kuwamizu Lutheran Church is located on the main campus of Jiai-en, one of the Lutheran social service agencies, with a care home for at-risk children and senior care facilities. The central Kumamoto Lutheran Church hosts an English-language worship group. The growing number of non-Japanese attending university or in the local labor environment has brought some growth to this ministry.
Kumamoto has become home to several international companies, thus increasing its global stature.
This is the capital of Kumamoto Prefecture on the southern island of Kyushu. It is a medium size city with a population of 737,500. There are numerous historical landmarks, including Kumamoto castle (reconstructed in the 1970s; heavily damaged in the 2016 earthquake; and rebuilt since) and Suizenji Garden. Nearby Mt. Aso is the largest active volcano in Japan and one of the largest in the world. Despite frequent eruptions, Kumamoto city has never been endangered.
Kumamoto has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cool winters. There is significant precipitation throughout the year, especially during June and July. The temperatures are highest on average in August, at around 83°F and lowest in January, at around 43°F.
