Description

Under the general supervision of the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the English instructor will teach a variety of English composition and literature classes and engage in a variety of learning support and instructional/institutional practices; mentor students by providing a positive and encouraging environment for learning; identify and implement assessment measures to achieve course, program, and college learning outcomes; work collaboratively within the Humanities Division; and serve on various college committees. The instructional load may consist of day/night classes; face-to-face, hybrid delivery, on and off campus classes. Some opportunities for online delivery and/or online course development. Base salary and ranking are determined based on the matrix outlined in the current Faculty Negotiated Agreement considering credentials and experience. This start for this position is Fall 2026. Essential Functions/Responsibilities To understand and commit to the Mission of the College ~ To provide a student-centered learning environment where students can achieve their educational, personal, and career goals. To foster a learning environment through the core values of students first, community, integrity, and innovation. Faculty employment in accord with the current Negotiated Agreement. Make continuous efforts to improve the quality of instruction by reviewing and utilizing innovative methodologies, techniques and delivery methods, and remain current on discipline-specific and pedagogical issues. Support the college initiative to enhance the student learning experience by reviewing, evaluating, revising, developing, and implementing effective and relevant instructional technology in the classroom such as institutional LMS, e-texts/open educational resources, video platforms, and relevant platforms (such as e-syllabus manager, e-evaluations, proctoring and integrity). Review, evaluate, revise, develop, and implement program curriculum within the department to assure compliance with professional standards, state-mandated guidelines, requirements of business/industry, and/or higher education regulatory agencies. Prepare syllabi and learning materials for classroom within college discipline, divisional and institutional guidelines. Teach an instructional load which may consist of day/night classes, various modalities and locations. Facilitate learning activities in assigned courses such as, but not limited to: College Preparatory English Composition, English Composition 1, English Composition 2, Creative Writing. Provide access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods. Attend and participate in department and division meetings, institutional committees, and activities required to maintain program and/or college accreditation standards. Assist in the articulation of courses with secondary and post-secondary institutions. Ability to develop and implement new courses to curriculum in various delivery modalities when requested Organize and maintain appropriate scholastic records for students and submit reports as required to the Records Office and appropriate administrative offices. Participate in assessment of student learning. Assist, as requested, with the development of the term class schedule and the college catalog. Serve on college committees. Other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Master’s degree in English or Composition Studies or a Masters in a related area + 18 graduate hours in English or composition studies or rhetoric and composition. Literacy in modes of delivery and instructional technologies; learning management systems (Canvas preferred), online syllabus creation software, online course evaluation systems, and industry specific software for student learning are examples. Ability to incorporate/utilize best teaching practices to drive student engagement and success in all learning environments. Thorough knowledge of content area. Fluency in English language. Effective communication skills. Ability to convey ideas to others in a clear, understandable manner. Critical analytical and evaluative skills. Organizational skills. Ability to create and maintain a schedule. Ability to think, write, and communicate effectively. Ability to effectively maintain teaching schedules, organize time, and execute duties in the delivery and support of high-quality instruction. Computer skills and ability to use technology in the classroom. Demonstrated teaching experience with developmental/under-resourced students. Demonstrated teaching experience with writing in digital environments. Valid Kansas driver’s license. Preferred Qualifications Experience teaching composition at the college level. Qualifications to teach additional academic discipline(s). Evidence of successful teaching developmental/remediated courses. Commitment to student learning/success. Bilingual (English/Spanish). Physical Requirements: With or without assistance Ability to understand written and oral instructions. Able to sit and stand for extend periods of time. Able to lift 20 lbs. and carry short distances. Ability to access classroom, office and other campus locations. Ability to move around in the classroom assisting students as needed. Work in typical office conditions. Ability to communicate essential ideas clearly in verbal, scribal, and/or electronic formats. Ability to receive feedback of students and colleagues in verbal, scribal, and/or electronic formats.
