Description

Greater Victoria Public Safety Unit (GVPSU) The Greater Victoria Public Safety Unit (GVPSU) is accepting applications from municipal police officers in the Capital Regional District (CRD).  GVPSU is an integrated unit consisting of police officers from all municipal police agencies in the CRD and consists of an integrated fire medic program supported by the Esquimalt and Saanich Departments. GVPSU members receive specialized training and equipment to maintain public order, manage large crowds, respond to civil disturbances, support public safety during lawful protests, and conduct large scale searches.  Additional training and duties include large scale evidence searches, pre-event searches, protester device extraction, evidence gathering, and the deployment of special munitions. Requirements and Responsibilities • Commit to a minimum of 3 years on the team • Attend a reasonable number of call outs per year • Attend three days of PSU training twice per year • Be able to work in large crowd environments for prolonged periods • Be able to work in environments where chemical munitions have been deployed • Be able to work well within a team and follow direction • Be physically capable of performing the operational duties associated with a public order unit • Attend and pass the GVPSU Basic Public Order Course October 20 to 23, 2026 • Minimum service of 2 years policing experience by the start of the Basic Public Order Course Preferred Qualifications • Previous experience in public order or major event policing • Advanced tactical, medical, or other related experience • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in high-stress rapidly evolving environments • Strong communication, de-escalation, and conflict resolution skills • Demonstrated history of working in team environments • Sound judgement and decision making under pressure • Demonstrated professionalism, discipline, and resilience The selection process will give consideration to maintaining a proportional representation from municipal agencies within the GVPSU. In addition, a limited number of Sergeant positions will be allocated to ensure appropriate leadership representation within the unit. All candidates will have an opportunity to receive feedback at the end of stage 2. Successful candidates will be invited to the GVPSU Basic Public Order Course, October 20 to 23, 2026.
