The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) Therapeutic Recreation Team is seeking energetic, dedicated, and fun-loving temporary summer Assistant Directors and Directors for our adapted summer camps or Inclusion Leads I/II to provide experienced inclusion support at adapted or general recreation camps throughout the County. These positions play a key leadership role by supporting camper needs, guiding staff, modeling best practices, and helping create inclusive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate camp experiences for all participants.
Responsibilities
Staff should expect to work Monday-Friday from June 22 - August 14. Additional weeks from August 17 – August 28 may also be available. Training and planning begin in mid to late May and includes a combination of independent and self-paced online courses and in-person training during 2-4 weekday evenings and may include select Saturdays.
We are seeking to hire several candidates for the following summer camp programs and services:
Inclusion Support: Inclusion support services help campers with disabilities fully participate in camp activities. This includes providing individualized assistance, adapting activities, encouraging positive behaviors, and collaborating with staff to create an inclusive and engaging environment for all participants.
Adapted Camps: Engaging campers ages 6-21 with disabilities; adapted summer camps offer modified activities, specialized support, and an inclusive environment. These camps provide engaging experiences like arts, sports, swimming, and sensory activities while ensuring accessibility and individualized assistance for each participant.
Successful candidates will have good character and integrity, effective communication skills, reliable transportation, ability to complete administrative tasks independently, take initiative, and work successfully in a team environment.
Qualifications
Minimums:
Assistant Director/Inclusion Lead I $19.49/Hour
Assists in directing camp programs and/or collaborates with camp teams to support campers with disabilities (ages 3–21) through individualized assistance and maintaining lower staff-to-camper ratios. Coaches team members on strategies to build skills, encourage positive behaviors, provide personal care, and promote independence within a supportive environment.
Education: High school/GED/Equivalent; plus
Experience: Some experience working with youth or administering recreation programs.
Director/Inclusion Lead II $23.46/Hour
Directs camp programs, develops adaptive program structure, assesses camper needs, coaches staff, assigns responsibilities, and conducts program, staff, and participant support evaluations.
Education: High school diploma, GED or equivalent; plus
Experience: Considerable experience administering recreation programs, including some experience leading/supervising recreation programs. *
*Substitution: Completion of some college coursework may substitute for the experience requirement (Director/Inclusion Lead II only.)
Licenses/Certifications: First Aid/CPR/AED Certification, or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
Working with individuals with disabilities; Working in summer camp programs or Arlington County camps; Working with youth, teens, or young adults in a recreation setting; and/or Working with diverse populations. Special Requirements
If selected, summer staff may be required to:
Agree to a criminal background check (for applicants 18 years and older). Provide references, which will be requested at time of interview. Attend all required training, wear a uniform, and ability to lift up to 25 lbs. Stand and walk for prolonged periods of time during the work shift. Be CPR and First Aid Certified as of the first day of camp. Possess a valid driver's license and successful driving history record check (for applicants 18 years and older). Provide personal care as needed for campers (training provided). Arlington County requires that all employees have a bank account to accept direct payroll deposits. Additional Information
Work Hours: Camps typically operate from 8:00a.m. – 6:00p.m. Shifts can vary up to 40 hours per week and are dependent on camp/camper needs. In addition, pre-camp trainings during the months of May and June will include 2-4 weekday evenings and may include select Saturdays.
