Job Description
Title: Certified Medication Aide Reports to: Charge Nurse/UCC
Department: Nursing Compensation: Paid Hourly
JOB SUMMARY
The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) works under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. It is the responsibility of the CMA to serve as a role model for CNA's. Personal care and service to residents is required in a manner that promotes flexibility, safety, comfort and has the resident's overall well-being at the focal point of each task. Duties are performed in accordance with recognized standards, the laws of Kansas and the Mission Statement of Wesley Towers.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
Responsibilities for Medication Administration:
1. Prepare and administer oral/topical medications as ordered by the physician and as directed by the plan of care.
2. Use "5 rights" when administering each medication, Right Resident, Right Medication, Right Time, Right Route, Right Dosage.
3. Document administration of medication on the Medication Record as outlined in the policies and procedures. Document outcome of giving PRN medications.
4. Notify the Licensed Nurses of stop orders, stock supply needs, drugs needing to be destroyed and medication errors.
5. Assist licensed nurse with removal of discontinued meds from medication cart.
6. Identify all residents utilizing photographs before administering treatments and medications.
7. Count controlled medications with a licensed nurse.
8. Keep medication cart clean and stocked for next shift.
Responsibilities for Resident Care:
1. Treat all residents with dignity and respect, including those with disruptive behaviors and insure resident rights are maintained at all times.
2. Assist with implementing resident's plan of care and assist with interpreting plan of care to CNAs. Provide resident with opportunities for independence and choice consistent with their care plan. Set example of quality nursing care for CNAs on the team.
3. Some shift assignments will require the CMA to be responsible for passing the majority of the medications to assigned residents.
4. Support and foster good relationships with residents, families and visitors.
5. Answer call lights promptly.
6. Provide input into the assessment of the resident and the care planning process by sharing ideas with the Charge/Licensed Nurse and Unit Care Coordinator.
7. Complete documentation of tasks performed and other documentation according to Wesley Towers policy/procedures, including vital signs, meal percentages, weights and other documentation as needed.
8. Assist residents with transfers, promote ambulation and exercise, transport residents as needed and as designated on resident Plan of Care using Gait Belts, proper transfer techniques, and lifts per facility Policy and Procedures.
9. Make beds and change bedding as needed for resident comfort/hygiene.
10. Meet residents nutritional needs by assisting with meal set-up as each individual resident requires and provide assistance with eating as needed; Responsible for distributing and assisting residents with snacks.
11. Report any behavioral or physical changes in residents' condition, problems, concerns, grievances with residents and/or families/responsible parties to the Charge Nurse/Licensed Nurse or administrative personnel.
12. Provide personal care for the residents in a calm, friendly manner including but not limited to:
a. Bathing
b. Dressing
c. Shaving
d. Care of hair and nails
e. Oral hygiene
f. Toileting, incontinent care, catheter care and placement.
g. Encourage self-sufficiency in performance of all ADLs.
13. Provide resident care in private, maintaining resident dignity and resident rights.
14. Maintain optimal resident mobility and skin integrity by promoting ambulation and exercise.
15. Check residents routinely to ensure all needs are met in a timely manner.
16. Maintain confidentiality of resident information.
17. Intervene appropriately to modify disruptive behavior.
18. Practice universal precautions and proper disposal of infectious waste at all times.
19. Perform treatments and document them in the nurse’s notes, including observations and progress.
20. Assist with activities/getting residents to activities to enhance resident functioning and well-being on both an individual and small group basis; become familiar with individual resident preferences.
21. Be aware of and follow plan of care; it is the responsibility of the CMA to maintain up-to-date knowledge of changes in plan of care.
22. Maintain open lines of communication with DON, Nursing Coordinator, professional nursing staff and other CMA's, CNA's.
23. Demonstrates a positive image to residents, families and other visitors, and peers to enhance the image of Wesley Towers, Inc.
24. Assist with and participate in continuous service improvement activities as directed.
25. Know the location of all standards/policy/procedure manuals, disaster manual, infection control manual, and Material Safety Data sheets.
26. Report all incidents and exposures immediately to supervisor.
27. Use and operate equipment in a safe manner. Report unsafe or defective equipment immediately to supervisor.
28. Demonstrate safety and cost effectiveness in the delivery of care according to Wesley Towers policies/procedures.
29. Is aware of cost to provide resident care. Use only equipment and supplies necessary to complete care.
30. Maintain a clean, safe, nursing environment at all times.
31. Note safety hazards and corrects them immediately.
32. Maintain Certification with State agency.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have current CMA certification in accordance with the laws of the state of Kansas.
Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
Must be capable of understanding and following oral and written instructions.
High School diploma or GED preferred.
Keep CMA certificate current by attending 10 hours of prescribed continuing education every two years.
Previous experience in geriatric care desired.
Ability to communicate with team members and residents.
Positive attitude toward the ill and the elderly.
Able to cope with the mental and emotional stress related to the position.
Special Demands:
Must be flexible as schedule changes. Willingness to work with the realization that errors or incompetence can cause serious consequences for the resident. Must have patience and tact and be able to communicate effectively with residents, families, and other staff members. Must have good eye sight to observe residents and to give nursing care, read thermometers, and to complete documentation. Can hear normal and soft tones to hear resident calls. Be aware that working with residents with dementia may expose staff to residents who become violent, combative, or aggressive without notice or provocation. It is important for all staff to respond in appropriate manner, remaining calm and non-threatening. Must be able to distinguish smells. Is familiar with and capable of operating all special equipment utilized for the benefit of the residents within health care.
Physical Demands:
Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, squatting and reaching above head. Must be able to crawl in case of fire. Must be able to lift unassisted up to 30 pounds. Must be able to carry unassisted up to 30 pounds. Must be able to do grasping and fine manipulating with both hands. Must be able to push and pull carts and to push residents in wheelchairs.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Works in well-lighted and ventilated building. Possible exposure to sharp materials and/or instruments. May be subjected to stressful situations and uncomfortable surroundings. Exposure to infectious waste and potentially infectious diseases.

Must have patience and tact and be able to communicate effectively with residents, families, and other staff members. Must have good eye sight to observe residents and to give nursing care, read thermometers, and to complete documentation. Can hear normal and soft tones to hear resident calls. Be aware that working with residents with dementia may expose staff to residents who become violent, combative, or aggressive without notice or provocation. It is important for all staff to respond in appropriate manner, remaining calm and non-threatening. Must be able to distinguish smells.
