Description
This is an open pool posting and applicants will be contacted only if a suitable position becomes available. Pool may be used to fill vacancies for the Fall 2025 - Summer 2026. This pool expires 05/31/2026. Applicants wishing to remain in this pool past 05/31/2026, must reapply at that time. Position Summary: Candidates are sought to form a hiring pool for potential temporary full/part-time adjunct faculty positions in the College of Performing and Visual Arts School of Theatre Arts Dance disciplines. Teaching assignments will be at the college level and include lecture, laboratory, applied lessons, studio, or recitation courses. Candidates who have the qualifications listed in one or more of the following program areas are encouraged to apply: Theatre, Musical Theatre or Dance. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in one or more of the College of Performing and Visual Arts School of Theatre Arts Dance disciplines or comparable professional experience. Preferred Qualifications: Master’s or Doctoral degree in Theatre, Musical Theatre or Dance discipline. Prefer evidence of outstanding artistry and record of successful college-level teaching experience in the discipline of employment. A commitment to quality instruction at the college level is essential. School of Theatre Arts and Dance Policy for Determining Qualified Faculty through Tested Experience CPVA Introduction In accordance with HLC, UNC Board Policy, and School accrediting bodies, CPVA uses credentials as the primary basis for determining faculty qualifications. In the case that individual programs may deem it necessary and appropriate to use tested experience in determining minimally qualified faculty, CPVA will follow the process developed by each School. Tested experience is defined as experience “the institution determines is equivalent to the degree it would otherwise require for a faculty position” (HLC, 2016, p. 4). NAST Faculty and Staff Qualifications Regarding the degree programs in STAD that fall under the purview of NAST Accreditation (all degree programs except for the Minor in Dance and the MA in Dance Education which do not fall under NAST purview), the following guidelines are provided (NAST handbook p. 60.) 1. Faculty members (including part-time faculty and graduate teaching assistants, as applicable) shall be qualified by earned degrees and/or professional experience and/or demonstrated teaching competence. 2. NAST recognizes the Master of Fine Arts as the appropriate terminal degree for performance, design/technology, and playwriting faculty. At the same time, the Association recognizes that some highly qualified artist-teachers may hold other academic degrees; others may not hold any academic degrees. In such cases, the institution should base appointments on experience, training, and expertise at least equivalent to those required for the master’s degree in the appropriate field. 3. Academic degrees are a pertinent indicator of the teacher’s qualifications for instructing in theoretical, historical, and pedagogical subjects. In general, the Ph.D. and comparable doctorates are the appropriate terminal degrees in these fields; however, creative work, research, and publication are indicators of a teacher’s qualifications, productivity, professional awareness, and contribution to various aspects of theatre and theatre-related fields. 4. Teachers of performance, design/technology, and/or playwriting normally are or have been deeply and currently involved as a practicing artist in the particular disciplines or specializations they are teaching. Credentialing / School of Theatre Arts and Dance Minimum Qualifications: All faculty in the School of Theatre and Dance teaching undergraduate courses, whether full-time or adjunct must have either 1. an earned Master of Fine Arts, Master of Theatre Education, Master of Dance Education, or equivalent theatre-related degree in the area being taught, or 2. tested experience equivalent to a Master of Fine Arts or a Master’s level degree in the area being taught. Those faculty who teach graduate-level classes must have either 1. a terminal degree in the appropriate field, or 2. tested experience equivalent to a Master’s AND tested experience equivalent to a terminal degree as outlined below in the area being taught. Terminal Degree: STAD recognizes the following degrees as appropriate terminal degrees for theatre faculty: MFA or PhD in Theatre or Dance[MM3] related disciplines, and an Ed.D. in Dance Education. Tested Experience: In some cases, tested experience (a significant record of professional achievement and experience) may be considered as a significant credential in lieu of an earned graduate degree. Per HLC policy “Tested experience may substitute for an earned credential or portions thereof. Assumed Practice B.2. allows an institution to determine that a faculty member is qualified based on experience that the institution determines is equivalent to the degree it would otherwise require for a faculty position. This experience should be tested experience in that it includes a breadth and depth of experience outside of the classroom in real-world situations relevant to the discipline in which the faculty member would be teaching.” Undergraduate Courses Faculty teaching undergraduate courses must have a Master’s degree in the area they are teaching. Faculty who do not meet this degree requirement must have at least an earned Bachelor’s degree in Theatre and tested experience as listed below: Fulfill all qualifications in at least one of the below categories, or Fulfill a combination of at least 5 documented qualifications among categories Category 1: Professional Qualifications Two or more in any combination within the program area of consideration: A minimum of 2 years of Professional Work Experience In-Field Professional-Level Projects or Consulting Experiences Professional-Level Workshops, Trainings, or Seminars taken A minimum of 2 years of teaching experience In-Field, outside UNC Category 2: Creative Output Expertise: Two or more in any combination within program area of consideration: Performances at the regional, national, or international level Directing, Choreographing, or Designing at the regional, national, or international level Lecturer/Presenter/Visiting Artist/Panelist/Keynote at the regional, national, or international level Productions of original creative works such as plays, musicals, or dance pieces outside UNC Category 3: Scholarship/Publication Experience Two or more in any combination within program area of consideration: National or International Professional Conference Presentations Peer Reviewed Journal Publications Peer Reviewed/Edited Books or Book Chapters Publications of original creative works such as plays or musicals Category 4: Licensures, Certifications, and Professional Service Two or more in any combination within program area of consideration: Licensure or certification by a nationally or internationally recognized organization relevant to the field Leadership in a nationally or internationally recognized organization Awards and Honors outside UNC Graduate Courses Faculty teaching graduate courses must have an earned terminal degree in the discipline they are teaching.
