Description

Job Summary: The Internal Medicine Physician is responsible for providing comprehensive primary care. This role involves diagnosing, treating, and managing a wide range of health conditions and diseases in adults, ensuring high-quality patient care in accordance with clinic protocols and procedures at Oyate Health Center (OHC). Essential Functions: • Responsible for the practice of medicine or direct service to patients involving the performance of diagnostic, preventative, or therapeutic services to patients. • Interviews and examines patients, reviews past medical history and requests and/or performs diagnostic tests and examinations as necessary to make clinical diagnosis. • Provides medical or surgical treatment and/or referral as appropriate. • Prescribe or administer appropriate medical treatment, therapy, medication, and other specialized medical care. • Orders, performs, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests, records, reports, and examination information to identify and assess patient's clinical problems and health care needs. • Collect, record, and maintain patient information, such as medical history, reports, and examinations results. •Records physical findings, and formulates plan and prognosis, based on patient's condition. • Monitor patients' conditions and progress and reevaluate treatments, as necessary. • Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients. • Refer patients to medical specialists or other practitioners when necessary. • Gives total patient care including prevention, health maintenance, early diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up services to patient(s). • Assures preparation of appropriate medical records for all patients seen to assure the accumulation and organization of all pertinent clinical data to provide comprehensive medical care. Ensure accurate information is documented within the patient’s electronic health record. • Works closely with allied health professionals in the provision of broad health program services. Interviews and examines patients. Instructs and counsels patients. • Must be willing to actively mentor students by providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities, ensuring they gain the necessary clinical skills and knowledge. • Regularly engage with students and provide constructive feedback to foster their growth. • Actively participates in clinic quality improvement activities. • Participate in meetings and represent OHC as required. • Utilization of EHR with accurate timely notes to ensure required documentation is entered for billing and referrals. • Must comply with federal laws and regulations as required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). • Performs related duties. Supervisory Controls This is usually in a senior management position or an advanced clinical professional: The supervisor provides administrative direction with assignments in terms of broadly defined goals or functions. Results of the work are considered technically authoritative and are normally accepted without significant change. Guidelines Guidelines include state and federal laws and regulations, OHC policies and procedures, OHC Medical Staff Bylaws, professional standards of medical practice, medical standing orders, and Centers or Medicare and Medicaid Services Conditions of Participation manual. These guidelines are not applicable to every situation encountered and require independent judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. Complexity/Scope of Work The work consists of broad functions and processes of an administrative or professional field. Assignments are characterized by breadth and intensity of effort and involve several phases pursued concurrently or sequentially with the support of others within or outside the organization. Decisions regarding what needs to be done include largely undefined issues and elements and require extensive probing and analysis to determine the nature and scope of the problems. The work requires continuing efforts to establish concepts, theories, or programs, or to resolve unyielding problems. The work involves isolating and defining unknown conditions, resolving critical problems, or developing new theories. The work product or service affects the work of other experts, the development of major aspects of administrative or scientific programs or missions, or the well-being of substantial numbers of people. Contacts Contacts are typically with clinical providers, patients, employees, community resource agencies, patient family members, CDC, State Departments of Health, local Health Departments, Tribal Health programs, and the general public. Contacts are primarily for obtaining, furnishing, exchanging, and providing factual medical information. Work Environment/Physical Demands The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; exposure to contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields. The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. The employee must be able to read, write, speak, and hear. Supervisory and Management Responsibility This is a non-supervisory position that may provide functional direction, guidance, and instruction to other employees when necessary. This position possesses authority to assign, coordinate, and review quality and quantity of work of other employees. Instructs employees in specific techniques or technical methods for accomplishing work assignments. The employee may perform the same type of work as other employees but may be responsible for performance of the more technically difficult, controversial, or sensitive work assigned to the unit or group. Direct Reports None Minimum Qualifications Must have a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree from an accredited medical school and successful completion of post graduate training and an approved residency program. Must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of South Dakota, or ability to obtain full or temporary license prior to start date. Full and unrestricted license must be obtained within one (1) year of hire. Must obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required or must be obtained within ninety (90) days of employment. ACLS certification, and PALS certification required. The GPTLHB is a tribal organization which follows tribal preference laws. It is our policy to give preference to qualified Indian/Tribal candidates over qualified non-native candidates in hiring decisions, if all other qualifications are equal. Compliance with our Employee Health Procedure is a condition of employment. You are required to agree that you will comply with all job-related employee health screening and immunizations prior to your first day of employment. Jobs require that you have documentation that you have completed the following immunizations prior to your first day of employment: MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella, Varicella (Chicken Pox), Hepatitis B, Influenza, T-dap (Tetanus - Diphtheria - Pertussis), and COVID-19 vaccination is required .
