Looking for an intern with the Sandy Valley Habitat for Humanity chapter who is willing to play a vital, multifaceted role in advancing their mission to build and improve affordable housing in partnership with the community. This hands-on position offers a unique opportunity to develop diverse professional competencies by working directly alongside leadership to support both field operations and organizational capacity. The intern will engage in projects ranging from conducting on-site repair assessments, collaboration with other groups, and driving crucial administrative initiatives. Additionally, intern will hone communication skills by capturing stories of partner families and projects. Intern will gain comprehensive, resume-building experience in nonprofit management and community development.
Organization Description: Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states and in more than 70 countries around the world. Habitat’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Habitat works toward this vision by building and improving homes in partnership with individuals and families in need of a decent and affordable place to live. As part of their willingness to partner, Habitat’s homebuyers invest hundreds of hours of their own labor, called sweat equity, working alongside volunteers and other Habitat homeowners.
Internship Duties, Responsibilities, and Career Competencies:
Assist the executive director and site coordinator in performing on-site repair assessments. (C, TW, CSD, CT)
Identify grants and other funding that align with housing and community development. Assist in drafting specific sections of grants and funding applications. (C, TW, P, CT, CTR, T)
Assist the Family Selection Committee by organizing application files and tracking applicant progress (maintaining strict confidentiality). (TW, P, T)
Meet with the Pike County Disaster Relief Group to discuss families in need of repairs and assist in matching families with programs to fund the repairs. (C, TW, P, CSD, CT, CTR)
Assist the executive director with volunteer outreach, which can involve cleaning up the volunteer database, logging volunteer hours, and generating reports. (TW, L, T)
Take high-quality photos and videos at build sites for social media. Interview partner families (with their permission) to create spotlight features. (C, TW, P, CSD, CTR, T)
Draft press releases as needed. (C, P, CSD, CTR, T)

Qualifications:
A current UPIKE student with interest/major/minor in Communications, Marketing, English, Social Sciences, Business, Mathematics, or relevant field.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Enjoyment in working with and serving others.
Strong leadership skills.
Detail-oriented and organized.

Confidentiality is imperative in this role. Must adhere to always maintaining the strictest confidentiality, even after the internship is completed.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm. Hours will not exceed 40 hours per week. Weekend work is optional as hours permit.
Physical Demands:
General Activity: Sit 1-4 hours/day, stand/walk 1-4 hours/day (varies)
Use of Hands/Feet: Using hands for typing, operating equipment, handling materials, measuring, and navigating around homes and job sites.
Weight Lifted: Up to 50 pounds (with the help of another person) occasionally.
Physical Demands: This is sometimes a physical job that requires intern to be active. Intern will be exposed to numerous environmental conditions, including but not limited to heat, rain, and indoor conditions. Additionally, during home inspections, intern may be exposed to allergens within the homes, including but not limited to dust, pet dander, and smoke.

Pay Rate: Beginning at $8.75/hour
Location: 137 Main St. | Pikeville, KY
Terms: Upon hire, the intern must register for the Summer II Internship course. To receive course credit, students will complete assignments concurrently with internship work. Students are required to work a total minimum of 80 hours and will eligible for the following credit hours: 80-119 hours of work + course completion = 2 credit hours; 120-159 hours of work + course completion = 3 credit hours; 160-199 hours of work + course completion = 4 credit hours; 200-239 hours of work + course completion = 5 credit hours; 240+ hours of work = 6 credit hours. Summer interns in this position cannot exceed 40 hours of work per week .
