POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility . To represent the YMCA personally, professionally, and in a manner following the mission and goals of the YMCA. The Wellness Center Instructor, under the supervision of the Health and Wellness Director, provides safe, motivational, and knowledgeable leadership to the members, volunteers, and program participants. All Merrimack Valley YMCA staff will help champion a culture of service excellence and support and advocate the mission and values of the YMCA.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Personal Trainer is responsible to keep up with their required minimum continuing education credits in order to keep their certification(s) current throughout employment.
The Personal Trainer Level I will work with only those clients who are free from medical and/or orthopedic limitations.
The Personal Trainer will initially meet with the Health and Wellness Director prior each client’s first training session, for the purpose of discussing the fitness testing, evaluations, and explanations of data, as the Level I Personal Trainer is not responsible and will not be allowed to perform such duties on his/her own.
The Personal Trainer will discuss all fitness programs with the Health and Wellness Director.
The Personal Trainer will be responsible for the explanation and description of all exercise protocol to the participant.
The Personal Trainer is required to keep all progress of the client well documented.
The Personal Trainer must maintain the confidentiality of the client at all times.
The Personal Trainer must make the Health and Wellness Director aware of any medical issue or complication to the status of the client, so proper follow-up and referral may take place.
The Personal Trainer is required to maintain a positive and professional attitude and out look at all times.
Serve as a YMCA resource in the area of health and fitness programming.
Keep safety as a first priority. Emphasize personal safety and emotional well being of all staff, volunteers, members and program participants using the YMCA and the YMCA Wellness Center.
By personal example helps interpret quality of YMCA Character Values or Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
Reports all accidents/unusual incidents immediately to the Member Advancement Director with all necessary documentation.
Accept and perform all other responsibilities necessary for the good of the organization.
Performs other duties as required by supervisor (remains flexible).
Customer Service:
Ensure member satisfaction by utilizing Activate America and Member Involvement Model while interacting with members, program participants and volunteers.
Initiate and represent a high quality of service and connectedness with all members, participants, volunteers and potential members in the wellness center and throughout the YMCA
Be knowledgeable about various YMCA programs and events information.
Be available to members, program participants and staff for questions, concerns, comments and follow up as needed.
Financial Development;
Provides leadership and support of Annual Campaign that result in achievement of our annual fund-raising goal.
Actively promote membership within department. Increase visibility and credibility of YMCA programs.
Other Duties :
Participate in the Activate America initiative.
Wear your staff shirt and ID badge for all shifts.
Attend staff training’s and update your skills as position demands.
Perform other duties as assigned by Senior Management.
Effect on End Results :
Growth and high retention of participants who understand the YMCA Mission and Goals.
Staff, volunteers and members will be developed through activities which assist them to identify their skills, develop values and chart a positive direction, assisting them to reach their full potential.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum 1-year prior experience in the health and fitness field thru employment and self-use.
Current YMCA Personal Training Instructor and/or national Personal Training certification throughout employment and/or Senior year college student in Exercise Science or equivalent with relevant clinical time
Full competency of all cardiovascular and resistance training equipment in the Wellness Center.
Must apply Personal Training skills by way of a mock training session with Health and Wellness Director and/or Senior Physical Director.
Must posses and utilize excellent communication, customer service and organizational skills.
Demonstrate prior ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Attend New Employee Orientation within 60 days of date of hire.
Must have good human relations’ and communication skills to facilitate positive relationships with staff, volunteers, parents, members and program participants.
Must be able to participate in various employee trainings, staff meetings and orientations at the YMCA.
Must be able to interact and communicate well with supervisors, peers, participants, and members.
Must be committed to the Merrimack Valley YMCA’s mission, character development and goals.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Responsible for one-on-one exercise program development and instruction with participants.
Able to stand/move while on shift for 4 – 5 hours without sitting.
