Job Summary
The Director, Communication & Language Center/Building Supervisor oversees the daily operations and coordination of the Academic Building while also supporting the strategic operation of the Learning Center. The position serves as the primary building coordinator, managing facility scheduling, maintenance and custodial requests, access control, AV/IT support, and long-term operational planning. The role also coordinates Learning Center staffing and services, supervises peer mentors and graduate assistants, develops workshops and professional development opportunities related to oral and written communication, and supports students and faculty with communication-intensive coursework, presentations, and job talks. In addition, the position teaches six credit hours per fiscal year in Communication or English.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of best practices, instructional strategies, and pedagogical approaches related to oral and written communication support and development. Ability to learn, utilize, and troubleshoot instructional and presentation technologies used within the Academic Building. Ability to recruit, train, supervise, and mentor peer consultants, advanced undergraduate students, and graduate assistants in effective tutoring and support practices. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and initiative-driven skills with the ability to proactively identify and address campus needs related to communication support services. Ability to develop collaborative relationships and effectively engage with students, faculty, staff, and community partners to promote Learning Center programs and services. Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to design and facilitate workshops, presentations, and professional development opportunities. Ability to coordinate multiple operational and programmatic responsibilities, including scheduling, facility coordination, and student support services, in a dynamic academic environment.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree and minimum of 18 graduate hours in Communication Studies or English and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience including experience teaching oral communication or writing courses.
OR An equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree. Supervisory experience.
Physical Demands (as needed)
Reaching overhead or below waist level. Carrying files, equipment, or supplies short distances. Frequent typing or keyboard use. Visual acuity to read printed and electronic materials. Hearing to distinguish sounds (e.g., phone calls, alarms)
