Our Lower School (grades TK-5) is in Palo Alto, CA, our Middle and Upper Schools (grades 6-12) are in Mountain View, CA, and the newest KLS campus (grades 4-9) is in Wichita, KS.</span></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">We were established to test and refine the educational vision outlined in Sal Khan's 2012 book, \"The One World Schoolhouse,\" which explores the development of modern education, the origins of Khan Academy, and a forward-thinking approach to both in-person and online learning. </span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Building on this foundation, Sal Khan's latest book, \"Brave New Words,\" further expands on his educational philosophy and vision for the future. At Khan Lab School, we're committed to implementing these innovative ideas and preparing students for success in the rapidly evolving knowledge economy.</span></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">ABOUT THE POSITION</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">The Humanities Specialist is an experienced teacher with a clear understanding and background in mastery-based learning in the context of the Middle School experience. The Humanities Specialist partners with the Middle School Director and Middle School teaching team to teach a rigorous, mastery-based curriculum, facilitate active learning experiences aligned with the KLS vision and guide students in their social and emotional development. In addition, this position involves contributing to the broader life of the school via participation in school activities and events, school admissions and faculty and staff meetings.</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"><br><br></span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES</span></p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Academic Duties</span></p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Teach</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> a minimum of 16 hours per week of middle school level subject-area courses as assigned by the Middle School Director, making efficient use of existing materials and tools. Return student work in a timely manner.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Clearly outline </span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">and document </span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">the </span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">course curriculum including the syllabus, all assignments, and assessments at the beginning of Term 1 using the school's Learning Management System (LMS) Canvas. Materials must be able to be repurposed by other instructors. Use internal materials, and external resources such as Khan Academy, where applicable.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Participate</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> in regular Canvas course reviews.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Design and teach</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> elective courses (2 hours per week) during the fall, winter and spring Exploratory sessions.   </span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Facilitate advisory and life skills lab </span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">sessions for a group of students, focusing on academic progress, extracurricular and college goals, and daily practices in mindfulness, character development, and executive functioning skills.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Lead</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> elective offerings during the fall, winter and spring sessions.   </span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Maintain regular communication</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> with students, families, teachers, and other professionals about student progress and submit progress reports by the due date at the end of each term.  Prepare students to participate in student-led parent-teacher conferences.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Other duties as assigned.</span></li>\n</ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Teaching &amp; Vision Alignment </span></p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Facilitate classes</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> with an emphasis on active learning and real-world contexts, minimizing direct instruction. Utilize methods such as think-pair-share, experiential learning, case studies, role-playing, and peer teaching. </span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Support </span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">student-driven passions and interests through the Applied Learning Program. </span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Leverage assessment data</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> to inform instruction, provide timely feedback to students, and complete progress reports by identified deadlines. </span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Clearly outline and document the course curriculum</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> including the syllabus, all assignments, and assessments by the beginning Term 1 using the school's Learning Management System (LMS) Canvas. Use internal materials, and external resources such as Khan Academy, where applicable.</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\"> </span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Identify, select, and modify instructional resources</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> to meet the needs of students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and learning needs in collaboration with the school leadership and founder. </span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Actively explore and stay current with emerging technologies, including AI tools, and apply them meaningfully to your role.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Create an inclusive environment</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> where students of diverse backgrounds and perspectives feel welcome, fostering critical thinking through thoughtful questioning.</span></li>\n</ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Contribution to KLS </span></p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Participate in student orientation</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> for 6th-8th graders, which may include up to three days of overnight stay. </span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Chaperone a trip during Intersession</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">, which may include up to five nights of overnight stay. </span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Fulfill duties</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> as assigned by the Middle School Director, such as lunch and goal time supervision. </span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Be accessible</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> to students throughout the school day for interaction, office hours, and support. </span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Serve as a faculty ambassador for the Admissions team</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> during our re-enrollment and admissions period in the Fall and Spring. This includes, at minimum, 6-8 hours for Pre-Admission events (Open House, Preview Days, and Shadow Days) and 10 hours of Post Application Events (Student Visits and Observations, Application reads); these events may take place outside of school hours. </span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\"> </span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Write letters of recommendation</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\"> for summer and school programs, as requested. </span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Lead at least one activity each year that contributes to the life and culture of KLS, </span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">to be determined in collaboration with the Middle School Director at the start of the school year. This could include: advising a student publication (e.g., Yearbook) or facilitating a student club or organization during the academic year.</span></li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-weight: bold\">Attend all faculty meetings and participate in professional development</span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">, including morning meetings, and any scheduled professional development programming (including Faculty In-service). Faculty must also attend community meetings and other culture-building experiences alongside students.
