Description Examples of Duties: Works in tandem with all nursing team leaders by units and shifts, as a valued member of the care team, ensuring excellent, comprehensive care is provided to all residents. Assumes leadership of assigned nursing unit, ensuring adequate staff coverage. Serves as house supervisor/charge nurse as assigned per shift, directing nursing duties for the facility and contacting the Director of Nursing for any coordination of care. Cooperates as a team member, communicating with nursing staff, other disciplines involved in resident care, and families/guardians about resident needs, as well as participating in care conferences. Participates in individualized care planning, demonstrating the practical skills and techniques necessary to develop, implement, and continually update resident care plans. Coordinates, manages, and evaluates the nursing care provided to residents, conducting direct resident care as indicated and directing nursing staff. Oversees attending physician/nurse practitioner visits and documents and follows physician orders. Assists physicians with examining and treating residents and also assists lab personnel when needed. Maintains precise and accurate charting of resident care, providing complete reports to other shifts. Completes nursing data collection for residents and contacts physicians as needed. Gives and records medications and treatments as prescribed and evaluates their effectiveness. Protects the individuality and rights of each resident. Initiates the investigation of accidents and other incidents. Assesses residents for changes in condition and determines immediate and follow-up care. Assesses residents for rehabilitation potential and encourages residents to achieve goals. Reviews and revises nightly care sheets and responsibility lists. Maintains and orders unit supplies and completes supply inventory checks, ensuring supplies are available for residents. Oversees the use and care of all equipment, regularly checking equipment for safety purposes. Administers immunizations as necessary, performing related duties as assigned, and ensures infection control practices are being followed. Supervises nursing performances and procedures, completes CNA staff performance appraisals, and investigates personnel problems. Provides teaching and guidance to staff, assists with training nursing personnel as necessary, and presents in-service/educational information to staff as needed. Participates in educational offerings to ensure professional growth and development, keeps abreast of current nursing literature and best practices, and stays informed of state and federal regulatory requirements. Follows Wisconsin Administrative Code Chapter DHS 132; federal regulations; and facility policies and procedures, rules and regulations, and in-service training requirements. Participates on nursing committees and on the nurse management team. Completes quality assurance studies and provides related information. Ensures safety for residents and staff and makes safety-related recommendations. Manages direct care staff, which includes unit oversight, directing the care actions of LPNs and CNAs, ensuring quality of care, and coordinating care involving other facility departments and outside agencies.
