Description
Join the team behind some of the Nation’s most important mineral resource data!
The United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) Mineral Resources Program is responsible for understanding the geology, mineral resources, and critical minerals that help power the Nation’s economy and support informed resource management decisions.
This is a rare opportunity to join us as a GIS Analyst to support USGS’s on-going resource investigations across the Western United States. This is not your typical GIS role. One day you may be georeferencing historic geologic maps and extracting data that has never been digitized. The next, you may be evaluating mineral occurrence information from technical reports, interpreting satellite imagery, building geospatial databases, or creating publication-quality maps, and figures that become part of USGS scientific product. You’ll work alongside geologists, geophysicists, and fellow GIS professionals who rely on accurate, defensible geospatial data to support their research. Success in this role requires someone who not only understand GIS, but also understands the geology behind the data. If you’re the type of person who enjoys solving spatial problems, working with complex geosciences datasets, and producing work that contributes to real scientific investigations, join XTS today!
Requirements Must have the ability to receive / maintain a favorable adjudicated Public Trust investigation (US Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident for at least 3 years). You’ve achieved a Bachelor’s Degree + 6 years / 10+ years of relevant experience. You’ve gained strong proficiency with ArcGIS to support geologic and mineral-resource investigations, including creating, managing, analyzing, and publishing geospatial data. Expertise in georeferencing and spatial data development, including digitizing geologic maps, managing shapefiles and feature classes, and applying coordinate systems and projections. Strong geologic interpretation skills, to include identifying lithology, mineralization, geologic age, structural features, and mineral occurrences from maps, imagery, and technical reports. Experience developing geologic and mineral-resource database using information from scientific literature, technical reports, and mineral deposit sources such as NI 43-101 reports. Experience using aerial and satellite imagery to identify and document geologic features and mineral occurrences. Ability to produce publication-quality geosciences products, including maps, cross-sections, and technical illustrations. Experience creating Federal Geographic Data Committee (FCDC) compliant metadata for geospatial datasets. Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro, Spatial Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, Image Analyst, Microsoft Office (particularly Excel), Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Acrobat.
If you are ready to support contribution to preserving valuable geoscience knowledge, advance our understanding of mineral resources, and support scientific investigations that have lasting impact, send your resume directly to Lanchi Lai, ([email protected]).
